CARTO is an international Master’s programme dedicated to educating global talents not only for the changing cartographic profession, but basically for all research domains where interdisciplinary competence such as geodata literacy, graphic literacy, critical reflection of ethical values and design thinking plays a fundamental role in addressing the grand challenges of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. It is jointly designed, promoted and operated by four partner teams from four universities: • Chair of Cartography, Technische Universität München (TUM, Germany), • Research Division Cartography, Technische Universität Wien (TUW, Austria) • Institute for Cartography, Technische Universität Dresden (TUD, Germany) • Department of Geo-information Processing, University of Twente (UT, The Netherlands) Following the guiding principle “mapping for a sustainable world” for the curriculum design and implementation, CARTO aims to prepare its participants with (1) fundamental competence of data science, (2) advanced theories, methods and technologies for a holistic understanding of the scientific cartographic discipline and multiple map-based worldviews, (3) awareness and sensitivity to ethical issues throughout the value chain of geospatial data that includes processes of data acquisition, modelling, analysis, visualization and user experiences, and (4) skills for transparent and trustworthy communication of cartographic knowledge in interdisciplinary and intercultural environments. The program is supported and advised by its globally networked research collaborators and associated partners, such as the Geospatial Information Section of the United Nations, and ESRI (world's largest Cartography and GIS software company). CARTO enrols up to 25 students every year from all over the world and is completely taught in English. Successful students are finally awarded a joint degree ‘Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Cartography’ issued by TUM, TUW, TUD and UT.
