Project summary

Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB) intends to set up a joint degree Master programme "Re-designing Post-Industrial Cities", together with seven partner universities. Thematically, the programme focuses on transition processes of European post-industrial cities. Students will be trained to develop solutions for urban challenges that contribute to revitalising such post-industrial cities. In doing so, the degree programme will go beyond existing urban studies or urban planning degree programmes and include superdiversity in urban contexts, the challenge of digitalisation in city management and administration of urban spaces, health in urban planning processes, cultural economy, effects of climate change (Green Deal), migration and social urban movements from different perspectives. In addition to a strong methodological underpinning (teaching contemporary approaches such as brownfield regeneration strategy, co-creation methodology, the current Bauhaus discussion, etc.), the programme will include numerous practical components (interdisciplinary design & planning studios, City Labs, and others), which will be carried out in close cooperation with the programme's stakeholders. Koҫ University (Istanbul, Turkey), University College Cork (Ireland), and University of Zagreb (Croatia) already signed supporting letters declaring their will to cooperate with Ruhr-Universität Bochum. These universities/countries have been consistently under-represented in participation in previous Erasmus Mundus programmes. Four additional universities were approached (Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam (Netherlands), University of Oulu (Finland), Université de Liège (Belgium), and Deusto University (Spain). Here, we expect to sign cooperation letters in the coming months, preparing the drafting of a comprehensive cooperation agreement between all partners. Ultimate goal is the preparatin of a competitive application to the Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters (EMJM) funding scheme in 2022.
