Project summary

CIVIS, a European University Alliance of 10 publicly funded comprehensive research-intensive universities from across Europe, offers cutting-edge education rooted in societal needs ranging from the local to the global. The CIVIS2 consolidation project will intensify the institutional cooperation achieved during the initial project by deepening the links between the members and implementing a set of transformative practices. The CIVIS joint vision has its partner universities join forces and invest in transnational cooperation to educate a new generation of European citizens on key contemporary challenges. These challenges are reflected in its five interdisciplinary Hubs: (1) Climate, Environment, & Energy; (2) Society, Culture, & Heritage; (3) Health; (4) Cities, Territories & Mobilities; (5) Digital & Technological Transformation. In concert with its academic Hubs, CIVIS2 will continue to: roll out challenge-based education and encourage intersectoral civic engagement. This is to be done in conjuncture with a further strengthening of its inter-university campus, an increase in mobilities, and an expansion of its embedded joint educational offer. CIVIS2 will: (i) allow the Hubs to continue as incubators of innovative education and research; (ii) increase seamless and inclusive mobility through new - in-person, virtual and hybrid - forms of educational and scientific exchanges; (iii) encourage innovative teaching methods through its Digital Campus; (iv) support new forms of intersectoral co-creation bridging the academic, social, economic, political and cultural worlds; (v) accompany a deeper institutionalization of the Alliance to facilitate both joint European degrees and the mutual recognition of academic courses at all levels; and (vi) reinforce its strategic partnerships with an array of African and Mediterranean universities through common projects tackling shared global challenges.
