Project summary

Hydropower is a reliable, clean and cost-effective renewable energy source that can be used to provide electricity to remote areas. It is an essential source of energy for Sub-Saharan Africa countries, where the demand for electricity is rapidly growing. Hydropower is also a rather specialized technology and it requires a skilled workforce to design, build, and maintain the infrastructure. Access to education in this sector is therefore critical to develop a competent workforce by providing the necessary skills and know-how for the hydropower industry. It is also paramount to raise awareness and understanding of the risks associated with hydropower such as the significant impact on the environment and local communities. The project Vocational Education and Training partnership for Hydropower (VET4Hydro) addresses this context of society transformation and aims to support and improve the hydropower VET sector of the Mozambique and Cape Verde. The consortium involves 7 institutions with complementary backgrounds and nature: 3 research and technological centres (LNEC, LEC and LEM), 1 university (UiA), 1 company (HCB) and 1 public administration institute (ICV). Intensive courses for trainers and teachers, assistance in designing laboratories, training in the use of laboratory equipment and joint courses between European and African trainers are some actions to achieve that aim. The objectives are: (i) to develop teaching skills and improve the teaching-learning process that takes place within the partners; and (ii) to allow the teachers to have access to the latest developments in the field and the labour-market needs, helping them to adopt new contents and new teaching methodologies. As trainers gain access to the latest technological developments and to the labour-market needs it is expected that they will be motivated to improve the contents of their courses. In this way, trainers can feel better prepared to carry out their training activities.
