The project R4Empathy - Using virtual reality for inclusive and action-oriented empathy in schools - will design, test and scale-up an innovative solution, supported by a quality assurance framework, foster the informed uptake of Virtual Reality for the development of cognitive empathy in schools, thus enhancing the quality and inclusive digital education at EU-level. Building on the state-of-the-art research at the nexus of VR, psychology and education, the project proposes a forward-looking approach at the EU level that will provide skills and resources to use VR as educational support for teaching topics across several curricula subjects (history, geography, sciences, citizenship), covering themes related with European historical facts, European social common values, and European citizenship and diversity, developing cognitive empathy, and improving the effectiveness of the learning experience. The project will also develop, test and validate a quality assurance framework for the development and use of VR in education. This framework will support the design of VR-based educational resources integrated into lesson plans with activities for students' individual and group reflection and a train-the-teachers programme that will be piloted in secondary schools in Portugal, Slovenia and Greece, involving teachers and students. To create conditions for achieving systemic impact in education systems, evidence-based policy recommendations will be produced for the adoption of the quality assurance framework for the development and use of VR-based resources in formal education. An EdTech Network to ensure cross-sectoral cooperation and multi-level uptake of the project’s results will be created and sustained after the project to ensure long-term cooperation and impact.
