Project summary

The traditional masquerade masks, common to several EU regions, serve as a starting point to this proposal, aimed to encourage a learning pathway through the different craft manufacturing processes involved in the creation of the masks. Masquerades do not only imply the creation of the masks, but also, they have a complete associated manufacturing process that brings forward costumes or musical instruments among others. The production of such items generates an economic activity which participates from identity and ethnic constructive processes in its communities. MASKS aims to provide students from craft vocational centres and Universities with the underlying knowledge and skills to make of the masks a state-of-the-art product. Therefore, we aim to provide training with a contemporary approach that safeguards traditional knowledge and implements it with the use of new technologies, which improve its execution and dissemination. For such purpose, the culture of the mask will be tackled in a comprehensive way and with a holistic perspective that is ascribed to various artistic, educational and tourist activities respectful with the values associated with the masks in the communities, so as to preserve and maintain them over time. For this purpose, an alliance of 12 partners, made up of three European Universities, two Vocational Training Institutions, two business associations, two SMEs, two research institutions (a public body and a NGO), and a museum, will complete a training action involving online training, mobility and a living lab activity. The program will be completed with two exhibitions of the works created during the learning process, together with samples donated for such purpose from craftsmen and partners. A minimum of 70 students will complete the training action and 20 of them will participate in the learning mobility.
