EU-GIFT, an Alliance of seven universities across Europe, aspires to be at the forefront of fostering sustainable and competitive food systems rooted in geographical identity within the European Union by establishing environmentally friendly, healthy, and equitable food systems and supply chains, ensuring ample opportunities for all in the future. Aligned with the European Green Deal, the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), and the Farm to Fork Strategy, EU-GIFT will confront challenges posed by climate change, disruptions in the food supply chain, water scarcity, organic practices, and rural depopulation. Given the exacerbated trend of rural depopulation post-COVID-19, EU-GIFT emerges as a crucial catalyst for rural development by providing educational opportunities, fostering innovation, and driving economic development through the production of geographical identity food and beverages, which will result in job creation, stabilisation of rural populations and living conditions enhancement. Responding to the imperative shift towards sustainability in agriculture and food production, EU-GIFT’s vision and mission revolve around five key pillars: 1. Excellence in Teaching and Learning; 2. Research, Innovation & Community Engagement; 3. Globalisation; 4. Diversity, Equality & Inclusion; 5. Sustainability. Guided by the Quintuple Helix approach, which bridges the gaps between university, industry, government, public, and environment, these pillars will enhance sustainable food and beverage production systems in Europe while simultaneously providing high-quality education, fostering research and innovation, engaging with local and regional communities, and championing diversity and international collaboration through Third Mission actions. This multifaceted approach positions universities as centres for a knowledge-based society, creating a transformative impact on the European agricultural and food production landscape and beyond.
