Project summary

Southern Mediterranean (SM) countries are facing continuous population growth, fast urbanization proces and negative impact of climate changes. All three partner countries, Egypt, Jordan and Morocco are spacy but poor with arable land which is under pressure of urbanization due to the population growth. Till 2050 Egypt population will grow 39%, Jordan's 32% and Morocco's 19%. To cope with those challenges one of the key actions which should contribute to sustainable development of SM countries is implementing urban and land planning based on modern principles and technologies which should enable effective land and urban areas management. Partner countries adopted national strategies addressing those issues and based on them serious efforts are undertaken (like building new Smart cities in Egypt, developing for example Amman, Aqaba and Rabat as Smart cities) showing how devoted they are to deal with problems. Geospatial technologies, satellites, drones, various sensors and modern concepts like Internet of things, intelligent transportation or smart cities, supported with applications like BIM or digital twins should together with ICT development enable transformation (both models and practice) of urban and land planning and management in active contributor in cities and countries sustainable and threats resilient development. But, precondition for successful implementation of mentioned tools and concepts are modern educated professionals and for this partner universities must modernize their syllabuses and adopt new concepts, models and technologies. For this purpose consortia of representative academic and non-academic partner institutions (which cooperation and interaction is essential) has been established and through knowledge and skill transfer, new approaches in education (problem based learning, practice, hackathon) and creation of association of interested stakeholders new, upgraded, profile of professionals should exit the universities.
