Project summary

The EMDM project Religion and Critical Heritage Studies: Towards an MA in Responsible Cultural Leadership (RELIC) is a groundbreaking initiative led by the University of Groningen in collaboration with six other higher education institutions in a joint attempt to strengthen research-driven education in the field of religion and heritage studies: the Jagiellonian University (JU - PO), The Cyprus Institute (CYI - CY), the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB - SP), the University of York (UY - UK), Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit (SSUS - IN), and the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM – MX). The project will take 15 months with the objective of developing a new, high-level, integrated, interdisciplinary and transnational MA that brings together religious studies and the cultural heritage field. The RELIC MA will fill a gap in existing EMJMs, and respond to EU policy recommendations by focusing on climate justice, sustainability, digital transformation, and the needs of grassroots and minority communities in heritage management. The proposed MA will draw students from across the world and from a broad spectrum of humanities and social science fields and educate them to become future-oriented leaders who understand the social, educational, ecological and economic value of cultural heritage, and who are able to connect it to the well-being of citizens, communities and institutions. The EMDM will also respond to institutional needs for the development and internationalisation of its consortium partners, assuring adequate support to partners that are new to the Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters. At the end of the 15 months, partners will have produced all necessary deliverables to assure a high-quality implementation of the two-year RELIC MA (120 ECTS, English as principal instruction language), including a ready-to-submit EMJM application, and the initiated joint MA accreditation process in the EQAR-listed agency NVAO.
