Project summary

Sustainability has become a dominating theme in the policies of higher education institutions and international and national sport organisations. Never mind advances, ‘sustainable thinking’ across the sport sector is still in its infancy, and there is a distinct lack of well-educated in sustainability sport leaders. To the best of our knowledge, no international graduate programme exists that comprehensively addresses the link between sustainability and sport. The proposed original high level integrated transnational Masters in Sustainable Sport Management (MSSM) programme aims to fill this gap. The new MSSM combines academic excellence with advanced practices by teaming up with leading sport industry partners. The programme will be delivered by an international consortium of established European universities including Brunel University London (UK), Bielefeld University (Germany), University of Bologna (Italy) and Université Gustave Eiffel (France). The Consortium also includes the following industry partners, the International University Sport Federation (FISU), Global Sustainable Sport, and the Lawn Tennis Association of Great Britain. The concept underpinning the proposed MSSM is premised on the integration of the values of sustainability with the core principles of learning and the UN Responsible Management Education Principles (PRME). The MSSM design explicitly commits to the promotion of the shared EU values of human dignity, equality, democracy and human rights, which constitute the cornerstones of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The project delivers on the three main objectives of the call including (i) creating a world class international graduate programme, (ii) forging a new partnership between academia and sport industry and (iii) enabling the participation of an underrepresented country. The new MSSM will extend knowledge and practice in relation to the ‘good governance and green sport’ aspect of the European Union Work Plan for Sport.
