Project summary

This Erasmus Mundus proposal aims to develop a two years joint Master level course on Sustainable materials, products and technologies. It will be designed to include an initial period of technical knowledge with aim of attracting engineering students with different technical backgrounds. Sustainability, both in a general sense and specifically in the context of sustainable product development, involves various disciplines. To effectively address this multifaceted concept, it is crucial to employ diverse approaches. This entails leveraging the expertise of consortium partners and recognizing the unique backgrounds of students. The significance of these varied perspectives will become particularly evident in collaborative teamwork, where students can contribute based on their specific knowledge and skills. However, as this knowledge is not usually sufficiently complete, each field of study analyses sustainability and sustainable development from its own perspective. Typically, neither undergraduate nor postgraduate mechanical engineering curricula at universities offer a multidisciplinary course on sustainability. The consortium consists of 4 HEIs partners, from Portugal (Polytechnic of Porto – School of Engineering), Lithuania (Vilnius Gediminas Technical University), Sweden (Halmstad University) and Belgium (KU Leuven). Industry is one of the keystones for sustainable development and for this reason, Industry partners will be involved from the beginning of the Master degree design, to enable practice-oriented study subjects and the needed guidelines for product development in the context of the global market. Based on the programme offer of the consortium members, this project benefits from the expertise and knowledge of the partnership to develop the new range of expert Engineers in Europe, focussing sustainable products development made of appropriate materials associated with the state-of-the-art of manufacturing technologies.
