Advancements in science and technology are enabling many companies in Europe and the World to develop and design materials for a more sustainable future in the backdrop of a half a trillion Euro global advanced materials market in 2023. Materials requirement in semiconductor industry can be totally different to that in medical device or aerospace industry. Progress in enabling technologies such as nanotechnology, biotechnology, robotics, artificial intelligence (AI), 3D printing, and material informatics means that materials engineer may need know chemistry and physics-based machine learning, de novo simulations, and eventually quantum computing to deal with emerging materials, engineering and applications. Europe also need to substitute scarce, and critical raw materials and innovate new materials, process and applications while ensuring stable supply chain and sustainable product life cycle. The Design Measure proposed here will identify and overcome challenges to design a joint European Masters degree that will produce highly skilled labour in the area of science and engineering of emerging materials. We propose to design an industry targeted, transnational integrated Master in Emerging Materials Science and Engineering (MEMSE) that will bring together European (Ireland, Germany, Poland, Slovakia and France) and International (India and Bangladesh) partners experienced in delivering industry-focussed master programmes in the area of materials science and engineering, applied physics, nanotechnology, advanced ceramics, semiconductors, medical devices, additive manufacturing, and energy. It will foster excellence, innovation, and internationalisation in higher education to deliver a highly skilled, internationally competitive workforce capable of driving the adoption of emerging materials in industry. The programme will make a significant impact in the fight against global climate change by promoting sustainability and economic development.
