Project summary

Climate-smart agriculture (CSA) supports food security and a sustainable environment. It is an answer to the effects of climate change, which make agricultural development in Tanzania (and the rest of Africa) more challenging than ever before. Transitioning to CSA farming practices requires a modern skilled workforce that can operate the technology and understands climate- and water-smart practices. Besides skills development of VET teachers, trainers, and students, VETs need to strengthen linkages to CSA stakeholders in their vicinity, particularly farmers and agribusiness. Our proposed project is a joint initiative of 4 agricultural VET colleges, 1 government institute responsible for all VETs in the country, 2 EU academic partners, and 1 Tanzanian private partner. Aim of our project is to achieve Vocational Excellence in CSA, ensuring high quality skills and competences of students by working closely with industry partners, which will lead to quality jobs and careers, and matching the needs of an innovative, inclusive, and sustainable rural economy. We have defined the following Work packages: 1. Effective project management, EU-Tanzania collaboration 2. Build and activate local CSA stakeholder platforms (CoVE hubs) and start public, private, and civil society dialogue & collaboration. 3. Develop a capacity building plan for VET and NACTVET staff. 4. ToT trainings on CoVE hub planning & management. 5. ToT training on developing needs-based CSA short courses, jointly with private sector. 6. Communication, dissemination, regional scaling, and sustainability. We build on our experience in Tanzania, other African countries, and the EU. Our project approach covers the identified needs of participating VETs and the VET landscape. It aligns to the Call objectives and thematic areas, to development plans of the Tanzanian Government, to priority areas of the EU-Tanzania Strategy, to EU policies to promote CSA and VET Excellence, and to Erasmus+ objectives.
