Project summary

The economic growth of the Gambia is expected to stabilise with positive developments in agriculture and tourism. These two sectors have the potential to create numbers of jobs for the Gambian youth. But because both sectors still not live up to their potential due to various challenges, they are not able to do so. This is the reason why many Gambian youths have decided to migrate in recent years in search for Greener Pastures to improve their standard of living. A lot of the challenges in the value chains exist because youth can not get the skills needed to tackle these challenges. Besides, there is hardly a connection between the Private Sector and the Educational Institutes. This argues for an opportunity driven approach where private sector developments and the services and training of TVET providers go hand in hand. In the G.R.E.E.N Gambia project we are addressing the main needs for TVET to maximize the benefits. TVET plays a crucial role in making sure that young people have the right skills for current and the new jobs in the eco-tourism and horticulture sector. Through TVET we empower the youth, promote sustainable development by focussing on ECO-Tourism and Food Processing, Entrepreneurship and linking labour market with the Educational Institutes for example by work based learning programs. All with the aim to create GREEN jobs for the youth and boost innovation in the linkage between the Tourism Industry and Agriculture. Last but not least, full attention will be addressed to the development of educational programs that contribute to the sustainable management of the environment and the country's natural resources. We particular attention to women: this approach might lead to a higher employment rate as other jobs in the value chain might be more appealing for women, rather than doing the physical labour in the horticulture sector.
