Project summary

The emergence of 21st-century learning paradigms has sparked debates about the adequacy of traditional school and classroom learning models in fostering the competencies required in the 21st century. The project aims to address the challenge of establishing high-quality and inclusive primary education systems across Europe by establishing a collaborative learning community involving a network of key initial teacher education (ITE) and continuous professional development (CPD) providers and stakeholders providing them with the opportunity to reflect and exchange knowledge and know-how about the role and potential of innovative and sustainable learning environment (ISLE) in primary education. In particular, the project involves three complementary and interrelated phases creating the ground for redesigning primary education learning environments using innovative and sustainable approaches and practices at the system, school and classroom levels. The project begins with mapping the existing national and international policies designed to support schools in establishing ISLE and identifying the current learning systems’ needs and challenges across the participating countries. Based on the policy and needs analysis’s findings, the consortium uses a School-wide Professional Development Program to equip and support in-service and pre-service teachers and headteachers to make use of innovative, sustainable and green learning practices that promote student learning (quality) and enrich disadvantaged students’ learning opportunities (equity). The last phase of the project focuses on developing evidence-based policy recommendations at the national and international level fostering policymakers’ awareness and informing education reforms and investments in the sector. The policy recommendations derived from this project will serve as a roadmap for redesigning and establishing more effective and inclusive learning systems across Europe.
