Project summary

The South Mediterranean region faces environmental and socio-economic challenges due to the underutilization of agri-food waste, leading to pollution and lost economic opportunities. Rich in bioactive compounds, vast agricultural waste remains untapped, while poor waste management exacerbates environmental degradation. A circular bioeconomy is urgently needed. AGROW-HUB tackles these challenges by fostering education, research, and entrepreneurship in agri-food waste valorization using green technologies. The project will establish two Green Agri-Waste Innovation hubs to enhance regional capacity in sustainable agri-waste management and circular economy practices. A collaborative approach focuses on three components—curriculum development, startup incubators, and living labs to promote education, entrepreneurship, and applied research. AGROW-HUB will modernize higher education institutions (HEIs) by co-creating curricula in agri-waste valorization and green technologies at six universities in Egypt and Tunisia. These will be integrated into undergraduate and postgraduate programs and supported by an international online course, expanding accessibility to diverse learners. Students and faculty will gain advanced skills in sustainable waste management preparing them for opportunities in the green economy. One startup incubator will be established, and another upgraded, providing training and mentorship for green startups focused on agri-waste valorization. A living lab will act as a hands-on training and demonstration center, offering standardized training programs and showcasing green technologies. The incubator will benefit from research and training activities, serving as a test bed for innovation. AGROW-HUB establishes a replicable model for education-industry collaboration, local communities and stakeholders through knowledge transfer and sustainable practices driving systemic change and advancing the circular economy across the South Mediterranean.
