Somalia faces critical areas for improvement in health professions education, including modernizing curricula, improving digital infrastructure, and establishing faculty development. These challenges contribute to a mismatch between education outcomes and labour market needs, ultimately affecting the quality of healthcare services in the country. This project aims to modernize and strengthen health professions education in Somalia by enhancing institutional capacity, curriculum relevance, and digital transformation. A consortium of Somali universities (Somali National University, East Africa University) and European higher education institutions (Maastricht University, Karolinska Institutet) will collaborate to develop competency-based curricula, implement digital learning solutions, and build faculty expertise. The project is structured around six interlinked work packages: 1. Project Management & Monitoring – Ensuring efficient coordination and quality control. 2. Foundation & Strategic Alignment – Conducting stakeholder engagement and aligning with national priorities. 3. Capacity Development – Training faculty, leadership, and administrative staff in innovative pedagogy and digital education. 4. Curriculum Development & Labour Market Alignment – Reforming curricula to enhance competency-based education and employability. 5. Physical & Digital Infrastructure Improvement – Expanding e-learning platforms, internet connectivity, and educational tools. 6. Dissemination & Sustainability – Establishing a Somali Health Professions Education Network to scale best practices and ensure long-term impact. Through this initiative, the project will enhance teaching quality, increase student accessibility to high quality programs, and strengthen the link between academia and the labour market. By embedding equity, inclusivity, and EU values across the work package activities, the project contributes to sustainable growth, jobs, and improved healthcare outcomes in Somalia.
