Project summary

Zambia, a least developed country in Southern Africa is facing significant challenges in its energy sector, with one of the lowest electrification rates in sub-Saharan Africa. Its heavy dependence on hydropower and climate change-induced droughts have caused severe water shortages in reservoirs, leading to daily power outages of up to 12 hours. Application and adaptation of energy-efficient lighting systems and solutions have great potential to reduce the increasing energy demand, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and improve overall energy access in the country. The main objective of the project is to improve the accessibility and quality of higher education in the field of energy-efficient lighting at universities in Zambia in order to reduce energy consumption and minimise the environmental impacts associated to increased energy use. The project aims to enhance the relevance of higher education for labour market and society by providing education and training to develop skills needed for green jobs and low carbon economy, supporting the clean energy transition and contributing to sustainable development. The main activities include the modernisation of bachelor’s and diploma curricula, the introduction of innovative teaching and learning methods, the establishment of teaching and research infrastructure, and teacher training. The project will also foster cooperation among academic institutions, industry, and society for sustainable results.
