Project summary

The Kenya Vision 2030 and the East African Regional Bio-Economy Strategy aim to achieve “A vibrant, inclusive and innovative bioeconomy contributing to sustainable economic growth and development in East Africa". Economies established on Bioresources have been appraised as suitable forms of development with essential circularity, reducing waste, and greenhouse emissions, while providing dignified green jobs. Bioresources, which are key in driving the Bio-Economy in East Africa are primarily from agriculture (over 151 Million Hectares (MHa)), forestry (78 MHa), and aquatic resources (12 MHa of inland waters, 2000 km of Coastline). The slow progress of Bio-economy development in Kenya is attributable to an underdeveloped enabling environment. The proposed project aims to establish a long-term High-Level Multi-Stakeholder Platform of Higher Education institutions, the Ministry of Education through the National Commission of Science, Technology, and Innovation (NACOSTI), the Commission of University Education (CUE), the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Industrialization as well as industry actors towards the creation of a National Bio-Economy Task Force. The Task Force is envisaged as a Think Tank responsible for overseeing educational and policy-driven actions towards the establishment of a vibrant bio-economy in Kenya. Specifically, the project aims to; a) build capacity of government agencies to enable them execute bio-economy policy gap analysis and identify intervention pockets for the creation of appropriate policies and guidelines, b) facilitate the development of Higher Education Bio-economy Curricula for the training of the next generation of professionals, c) activate the establishment of communities of practice and living labs for continuous stakeholder engagements. The project will deploy high-impact stakeholder engagement for the design of a National Bioeconomy Educational and Policy Framework in Kenya.
