This grant will support the creation of a new Erasmus Mundus Master in Global Security and Global Health that will train future experts in work in policy making, global governance and health provision to tackle the increasingly complex planetary health crisis. It brings together HEIs from Spain (Institut Barcelona d’Estudis Internacionals (IBEI) and IS GLOBAL), Czechia (Charles University), Belgium (KU Leuven) and the UK (Manchester) in a consortium to design and deliver an innovative programme that is an essential contribution to meeting the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals - and beyond. The programme is multidisciplinary in nature, combining clinical and medical studies, public policy, security studies and global governance, and its goal is to educate future professionals in the complexity of the global health governance regime on the one hand, and the intricate security-health nexus on the other hand. Students will spend the first two semesters in Barcelona, taking courses at IBEI (public policy and security) and IS Global (Clinical and research approaches to health), and then relocate to the KU Leuven’s Centre for Global Governance Studies, to broaden awareness of complex governance structures and the intersectionality of health with other SDGs. In the fourth semester, students choose between either Charles University’s Department of Security Studies or the University of Manchester’s Humanitarian and Conflict Response Institute. The former consolidates a wider appreciation of security, while the latter focuses on humanitarian concerns and conflict situations. The proposed benefactor of this grant, IBEI, is currently a member of two EM consortiums (MMAPP and ILGSPD) and has experience participating in EM programmes since 2008. This application will facilitate IBEI taking the next step in consolidating this experience by designing and coordinating an important new programme.
