Project summary

URBANFUTURES unites five leading European higher education institutions with the shared aim to design and implement a Joint Master’s programme in practice-based history for sustainable, resilient and just future European cities. Europe needs future professionals with a practice-based historical understanding of existing buildings, landscapes and urban areas and approaches to make nimble decisions about their adaptation, renovation and care. URBANFUTURES will provide these methods and practice-based historical knowledge, thereby filling a crucial knowledge gap so that future practitioners in new green jobs can be driving forces in the comprehensive cultural change envisioned by two core EU initiatives: 1) the European Green Deal’s aim to promote circularity, energy- and resource-efficiency by renovating the existing building stock; 2) the New European Bauhaus’s aim to foster sustainability by transforming buildings rather than creating resource-consuming new builds. The teaching will be problem-based and take place in four European cities, enabling students to learn from multiple local real-life situations and processes of renewal, adaptation and care. Our strong team, which provides research-based teaching across the University of Copenhagen, LMU Munich, TU Delft, the Estonian Academy of Arts and KTH Stockholm, together with our partners at the University at Buffalo, University of Cambridge and ETH Zurich, is committed to this vision and has developed a strong framework within which to carry it forward. Key outputs of the EMDM will be: (1) an URBANFUTURES curriculum description, (2) a Joint Consortium Agreement and Joint Student Agreement, (3) an URBANFUTURES Implementation Accord comprising detailed planning of jointly delivered a) communication and promotion, b) student application assessment, c) admission and enrolment, d) student services, e) graduation and diploma, and (4) an URBANFUTURES manual on best-current-practice for establishing joint programmes.
