Project summary

Environmental sustainability is crucial for securing a safe future for humanity on Earth, demanding a balanced approach to natural resource management, social development and economic growth, and recognising the need for an international dimension to tackle global challenges. The Erasmus Mundus Joint Master in Engineering for Environmental Sustainability and International Cooperation (EESIC) is a two-year programme (120 ECTS) jointly offered by Università di Trento (Italy), Universitat Politècnica de València (Spain) and Instituto Superior Técnico de Lisboa (Portugal). It trains a new generation of environmental engineers to address complex technical and non-technical engineering challenges and design innovative and sustainable solutions that are durable and appropriate to local contexts. In the first three semesters, students rotate among the partner institutions, engaging in a curriculum that integrates traditional civil and environmental engineering subjects with transdisciplinary knowledge, research methodologies, nature‐based innovations, and a systems‐thinking approach. This structure strengthens academic foundations while enhancing practical skills and intercultural competence. The fourth semester further enriches the learning experience through the expertise of Associated Partners worldwide, broadening students’ perspectives and practical insights. A hallmark of the programme is its emphasis on challenge-based, project-oriented learning. A key component is a collaborative group project featuring supervised fieldwork in real-world international development initiatives. This hands‐on experience is complemented by a final thesis centered on applied engineering research, empowering students to formulate solutions that are environmentally sound, economically viable, and socially responsible. Graduates emerge well prepared to tackle complex environmental challenges, collaborate across disciplines, and contribute meaningfully to sustainable development worldwide.
