Music in Action in Contemporary Society (MUSACT) aims to develop a joint international master's programme centered on music as social practice. MUSACT will train future musical professionals to interact with the societal contexts in which music is practiced, emphasizing musical participation and action rather than music as performance and consumption. The MUSACT program includes real-world internships with local stakeholders, enabling students to develop research-based musical practices based on their skills and fields of interest, situated in and interacting with contemporary society. MUSACT draws on musicology, performance, education, music therapy, community music, ethnomusicology and anthropology and brings together six international partners: University of Agder (NO, University of Jyväskylä (FIN), Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz (DE), University of Macedonia (GR), University of Brasília (BR) and Université Bourgogne Europe (FR). MUSACT responds to four experienced challenges: (1) music as social practice is well researched, but insights have not sufficiently changed how music is studied, (2) there are no study programmes that unite the different disciplines that seek to understand and develop music as social practice, (3), initiatives related to the proposed study field tend to be local or project-based, and (4) joint degrees require extensive synchronization of administrative systems between institutions. The project aims to create a fully designed joint MA program ready to launch, with integrated student administration structures and joint degree policies, as well as to submit an EMJM application. The project’s long-term impact includes changing how music is studied, strengthening educational philosophies, and improving the employability of music practitioners across sectors. MUSACT aims to demonstrate music as artistic and participatory citizenship, potentially shaping cultural, educational, and research policies.
