Project summary

In response to a climate of anxiety and a loss of confidence in local institutions, young people around the world are deploying new, alternative forms of civic engagement that often escape the notice of public authorities and can run out of steam in the long term. Nurturing this vital force of youth participation is such a key factor in maintaining democracies, individual freedoms, and in meeting the challenges of tomorrow's world, that it is one of the European Council's top priorities. The Legalize Youth Dreams project aims to strengthen the skills of youth organizations in supporting young people's initiatives, notably through cooperation between 2 European countries (Sweden and France) and 3 southern Mediterranean countries (Tunisia, Jordan and Egypt); a partnership rich in these differences, united around young people's common demands and able to draw on each other's experience. The European partners will draw on their experience of democratic participation, while the southern Mediterranean countries will share their more recent experience of mass mobilization of young people. Project activities will involve in-depth local analyses, the sharing of transnational experiences and analyses, research and the creation of teaching methods and tools, the synergy of local dynamics and the mobilization of young people from all social and cultural backgrounds, with a particular focus on those who are farthest removed from youth structures. This diversity, based on shared convictions and successful experiences, will reinforce the impact of the LYD project and its website, the adaptability of the results in different contexts, and their dissemination and exploitation by all those involved in youth work throughout Europe and internationally. The aim is to provide lasting support for young people's initiatives, and to ensure that the expectations of young people are better taken into account in public policies, so as to make their dreams a reality.
