Digital and Media Literacy (DML) is probably one of the most important skills sets in our times, with an increasing relevance in private life, in civil society engagement and in the world of work. At the same time, when it comes to preparing learners for their future, research shows that DML is implemented in highly inconsistent ways across European educational systems, often rather treated as a peripheral skill rather than a core competence, lacking a comprehensive, systematic approach across different educational levels from kindergarten through to high school. TAMeLi, the Erasmus+ Teacher Academy for Media Literacy, is a large-scale initiative involving 14 partners in nine countries from universities, training centres, media education providers and schools, with the ambitious mission of establishing a European framework to equip (future) teachers with the dispositions they need to collaboratively design for DML in the curriculum. This includes equipping them with the abilities they need to critically navigate and effectively use resources and approaches based on the latest AI developments. Our objectives are • to map and analyse current DML in teacher education and schools across Europe with a view to identifying gaps and opportunities, • to create a modular framework including resources and guidelines on designing collaboratively for DML that can be used by teacher educators across Europe, • to pilot the framework and associated resources with teacher educators in large-scale pre-service and in-service settings in order to refine our outputs based on sound evaluation, • to raise awareness of the importance of DML in teacher education and schools amongst policymakers and other teacher educators by creating and disseminating recommendations and building a sustainable community of interest, and • to ensure the sustainability of TAMeLi by embedding our outputs and community of interest in established and existing organisations.
