Project summary

Article 21 in the Charter of fundamental rights of the European Union states that any discrimination „based on any ground such as sex, race, colour, ethnic or social origin, genetic features, language, religion or belief, political or any other opinion, membership of a national minority, property, birth, disability, age or sexual orientation shall be prohibited.“ In our daily lives we are nevertheless confronted with discrimination - at school, work, apprenticeship place, in our free time or increasingly in social media. To experience and/or observe discrimination leads to a queasy feeling. In Tyrolean dialect this feeling can be described in the words of the title of the project: “Uns wird gleich ganz anders”. The project aims to oppose the feeling of nausea and helplessness. It will show affected people ways of coping and will raise awareness among rarely concerned people. This will be done with a campaign against discrimination, which will be implemented by two teams of young people in two locations (Wörgl in North Tyrol, Bruneck in Trentino- South Tyrol). Both groups consist of 15 people between 16 and 25 years. Their own experiences as well as the know how that they will acquire in several workshops will be incorporated in the campaign. At the beginning of the project five young people and two youth leaders from both organisations will take part in a meeting in Wörgl. In this meeting they will together explore the subject of discrimination and find out similarities and differences concerning this subject in both countries. Following this first meeting workshops will take part in both regions. Aim of the workshops is firstly to give young people the possibility to exchange their experiences and to learn how to implement their thoughts and ideas in a campaign. The workshops will be supported and supervised by experienced and competent trainers. They will focus on non-formal learning and interactive teamwork. In Wörgl three full-day workshops will take part. The first workshop will give a theoretical input. Main questions will be: What is discrimination? Who is affected? Which rights do affected people have? Which opportunities for actions are there? In the second workshop argumentative skills and techniques can be explored and practiced. Workshop three will supply participants with equipment on how to creatively implement the campaign (creative writing and graphic design). In Bruneck one full day workshop will take place. Participants will have the possibility to discuss discrimination and where and how it affects us in our daily lives. At the same time they will discuss possibilities how to use this knowledge in a campaign against discrimination. Designing and realising the campaign strengthens the participants' skills in planning and implementing a project. It demands creativity as well as organisational talents. The development of specific and visible products (such as posters, flyers, printed shirts and other everyday objects) will be a motivating factor for the participating young people. Prior to the start of the campaign a second meeting of five young people and two youth leaders of each organisation will take part, this time in Bruneck. In this meeting results as well as experiences will be exchanged. The products designed in both teams will be presented to each other and can be used in both regions. During the whole project, especially while working on the ideas of the campaign, there will be an exchange of ideas and experiences between both teams via several forms of media (telephone, E-Mail, Skype, Homepage). This will not only be helpful in working on the campaign but also serves to broaden the horizon of the participants. The campaign and the final products of both teams will be presented to the wider public and subsequently discussed. The aim of the campaign is to also raise awareness among the residents in both regions.

Final report summary

It will show affected people ways of coping and will raise awareness among people who are rarely involved in this topic. This was done by a campaign against discrimination which was created by young people. The campaign was prepared by young people between 16 and 25 years in two places (Wörgl in North Tyrol, Austria and Bruneck in South Tyrol, Italy). The young people were able to get to know each other and exchange experiences and ideas in a first meeting. In the subsequent Workshops and meetings they worked on the final products of the campaign. The aim of those products was to draw attention to the various forms of discrimination. The workshops, which were interactive and based on non-formal learning, were supervised by capable trainers and experts who were able to give support and advice. Finally the campaign consisted of several different products. There were placards, a photo exhibition, roll-ups, a website for information and a dance performance, which was presented live and is also available on youtoube.com. Planning and implementing the campaign together strengthened the self-confidence of the participants, encouraged their creativity and demanded organizational skills. Developing specific and visible results/products was a big motivation for the young people and gave them the possibility to present their matters of interest to the public and to participate in society.
