THE CONTEXT OF THE PROJECT "HEALTHY MINDS FOR HAPPY LIVES"School the place where children get educated but it is also a very important environment that influences the emotional and social development of a young person. It is essential for schools to promote and protect students’ health in its every aspect. Unfortunately, schools on every level seem to neglect the issue of students’ mental health. There are a lot of activities that educate students about the importance of a healthy diet, physical activity etc but little is being done about young people’s mental health. The older students get the less attention is paid to their education in this area. The older they get, the more risk factors there are around them and the more help they need. High school students are surrounded by risk factors all the time. The educational programs get more difficult, they are supposed to decide about their future even if they might not be sure what they really want, they have complicated relationships with their peers, they are often victims of aggression and cyberbullying, they experience their first loves, they find it hard to get on with their parents, they are tempted by the material world which offers them a lot of easy but costly pleasures, they live in virtual world of social networking sites which make it hard for them to face reality. At the same time schools concentrate on the results, tests, exams. No action is taken to support students in their effort to fight the risks, deal with problems and stresses of everyday student life. Sadly, young people’s mental wellbeing is ignored and neglected. That is why we have decided to do a project that can help us improve the situation at our schools and hopefully will inspire other schools to do the same. THE MAIN OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT - to develop students' and teachers' competences- to raise students', teachers' and parents' awareness of the importance of mental health - to make schools more student-friendly places - to teach students how to look after their mental health- to teach teachers how to recognise and help their students' problems- to change the educational methods and materials used by teachers NUMBER AND PROFILE OF THE PARTICIPANTSOur project allows students from 5 secondary schools from 5 different European countries to come together to establish linguistic and intercultural understanding. There will be 3 project meetings with the participation of teachers and pupils (6 pupils and 3 teachers from visiting schools + students and teachers from host schools will participate in them) There will be 2 teachers' meetings as well. More than 3000 beneficiaries will be impacted at the end (students, teachers, parents, students and teachers outside project schools). The project aims to involve students coming from socially and financially challenged backgrounds in equal proportion with students coming from average-income families. Also, there will be a number of SEN students directly involved. ACTIVITIES AND METHODOLOGYThe activities are planned to eliminate mental health risk factors and enhance the protective factors:-classes/workshops on verbal aggression, cyberbullying and hating on the Internet including regulations and laws connected with the problem, communication training, stress fighting teachniques- annual participation in Safer Internet Day (lectures, competitions, workshops etc)-implementing new teaching methods and tools by teachers of different subjects (ICT, tablets etc)-workshops and training for teachers on new technologies -job-oriented workshops and meetings with students and graduates of different faculties -workshops for parents on the difficult “art” of communicating with teenagers - activities and tasks meant to strengthen the positive school atmosphere (sports equipment for after school classes, My Perfect Classroom etc)RESULTS AND IMPACT -the students will increase their competences in many fields (English, ICT, communication skills, self-confidence etc)- the teachers will increase their competences (ICT, psychology, students’ mental health)- the parents will increase their competences ( workshops and trainings for parents and guardians)- greater attention will be paid to students’ mental health by schools and teachers - there will be strong protective factors at each of the schools (positive atmosphere of the schools, well integrated peer groups, anti- violence policy and competent adults, student-friendly teaching methods)-students will know how to deal with difficult situations in their lives, stress, aggression, cyberbullying, mental disorder, communication barriers etc. - new methods and tools will be used by teachersLONGER TERM BENEFITS The changes introduced in the project will be put into practice at the schools after the project finishes, some of them may be used by other schools too.
