Project summary

In Central Europe there has currently been massive extinction of bee hives. However, it does not seem to be caused by varroasis substantially. It is more due to poor condition of the environment and due to overuse of pesticides in agriculture and forestry. In the whole history, the situation is worst right now. Beekeepers organisationds in Europe are looking for a new way... The project called "Beekeeping and its Role in Countryside Ecology and Rural Development" is a project aimed to sharing experiences at the level of seven different organizations from five EU countries in which the organizations are more or less engaged in the field of beekeeping, education, ecology and rural devepopment. It will be in total 100 mobilities (including 27 student mobilities and 73 mobilities of pedagogues and mobilities of representatives of non-profit sector and then also those of people from practice sphere). The project is aimed at beekeeping and things related, such as agriculture and crop pollination. In this industry, the EU countries have different historical experiences and different approaches to beekeeping, treatment of bees, processing etc. There are also various kinds of honey. Honey has been the essential food of the Europeans for ages. Therefore, honey is also adulterated quite often. Bee colonies across the EU also quite often suffer from huge amounts of pesticides and insecticides in agriculture and forestry. In some EU countries, especially on the islands, there are so-called reference sites where chemicals are not used at all and the bees are much healthier than in the agrarian landscape. Likewise, health conditions of the bee colonies can also be affected by many flowers and source of food. In this project, we will explore various approaches to beekeeping in partner countries; we will provide the Czech beekeeping society with alternatives and examples of good practice in this industry, using dissemination activities. Partners of the project are experts in beekeeping. Both the universities involved are fitted with a national research centre for beekeeping. Czech and Polish partners represent educational institutions from which young beekeepers are recruited. Project participants are students of vocational schools, their teachers and people who are active in vocational training and experienced in the beekeeping and local marketing. Our goal is to combine theory and practice of teaching and local bussiness. Then demonstrate good practice and "know how", how to do business in this sector. The main idea of this point is cooperation for innovation and the exchange of good practices between different institutions devoted to the beekeeping in education. In the whole time of the project duration, we will be working on electronical magazine (5 issues) which will continue to be used for teaching subjects at schools and educational institutions. Results of the project, all the information, and dissemination activities will be also presented on the web and fb profile of the all institutions. All the organizations shall do their best to present the project and its outputs at any time during its course and also after finishing the course. Based on implementation of local activities, the target group of the project shall become wider. There shall be workshops aimed at beekeeping, ecology and rural development. So: "Albert Einstein said that mankind would survive four years after extinction of the bees. There are no crops without pollination; animals will die of hunger - and the people with them." And this is true!

Final report summary

Albert Einstein said that mankind would survive four years after extinction of the bees. There are no crops without pollination; animals will die of hunger - and the people with them. The project called "Beekeeping and its Role in Countryside Ecology and Rural Development" was a project aimed to sharing experiences at the level of seven different organizations from five EU countries (Czech Republic, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria and Portugal) in which the organizations were more or less engaged in the field of beekeeping, education, countryside ecology and rural devepopment. Beekeeping with are meant as commodity which provides the people with livelihood and also major source of incomes in some areas. The project deals with the status of regional policy and development in relation to this topic. It deals with the ways of how institutions in individual countries support small farmers and beekeepers and how the non-profit and educational sector can get involved in the field of promoting this activity. It can subsequently influence both the issue of employment in a particular region and overall shape and character of the landscape or its attractiveness. The project results was arrangement of 4 mobilities in 4 countries of 7 organizations (in total 82 mobilities, including 33 student mobilities, 49 mobilities of pedagogues, mobilities of representatives of non-profit sector and then also those of people from practice sphere). But totally we made 101 mobilities (19 above). All partners were actin in vocational training (education) in their region or provide vocational training to schools (as experts from bussinness practice).Goal was to combine theory and practice of teaching and local bussiness. Then demonstrate good practice and "know how", how to do business in beekeeping on organic way. The main idea of this point was cooperation for innovation and the exchange of good practices between different institutions devoted to the beekeeping in education. In the whole time of the project duration, we made educational material (5 issues of Magazine) which were continue to be used for teaching subjects at schools and educational institutions. You can also download this materila in free PDF format froma webpage: beekeeping-ecology.eu. The material is to present results of comparison and offer examples of good practice. It can be used as a guide for turning a relatively neglected area, such as beekeeping, into the shape of a strategic issue for development of a region or in vacation trainnig. Working on this materil were shared by experts from all the countries and involved organizations, including their assistants. Natura Opava will be a guarantor and editor of this. The project was also aimed to achieve wider integration of young people from partner countries via organizing this project. They will overcome language and social barriers. They will learn to communicate and solve situations in an international team. These aspects, including acquisition of professional knowledge, were provide the students with useful experiences for their future professional lives. Regarding teachers and professional assistants, it were make their methodology profiles wider and allow them to exchange experiences in an international team.
