Project summary

The joint project of Joroisten lukio in Joroinen, Finland and Vajda Péter Evangélikus Gimnázium in Szarvas, Hungary will focus on the history of there two countries, and especially the turning points in certain decades in the 19th or 20th centuries. The students will participate in history classes where they select important historical events and mutually agree on studying them. The first connections between the schools take place online. Comparing the selected periods of time is the key to all the work. In Finland the new curriculum with its "phenomenon-based" learning gives an excellent opportunity to involve the whole school in the studies of history in the Erasmus+ project context. In Hungary the focus in history learning will partly be changed to follow the selected decades in particular. We have chosen a "decade" as the background for the study of a historic event to give a wider perspective for a specific turn-point. After the initial involvement of all students in grades 10 and 11, we will form a team of 12 students (in both schools) who will take part in the mobility. The objective of their work is to introduce and present a historical event in a different, artistic, perhaps entertaining way. The process is documented in the Blog that the students regularly update and, at the same time, compare the events in their countries with each other. Before the mobility session it is important to prepare detailed presentations on the history of the specific event in the hosting country to be taught to the visiting team. The mobility teams are selected with a wide range of criteria, for example, on the basis of their activity and work in history, artistic skills, IT skills and general positive conduct. The decisions on who to join in the mobility are made by the responsible, supervising teachers ( 2 in both schools). The outcome of the mobility sessions is to be artistic, so, the project will cover many school subjects: history, literature, visual arts, performing arts, PE, IT and specifically making a film or an animation. The project language is English but Finnish and Hungarian will be studied as well. The teams of 3-4 students will present the outcome of their work in front of the school students, and after that publish the produce online in different forums. The purpose of the project is to enhance the understanding of history in an European context and give the students an opportunity to use their language skills in practical circumstances. Making art and watching art always make a deep impact on the people whether they are actively involved in the process or just seeing the outcome of other artists' work. The benefit of this project is to show how team work on a specific theme can bring joy in one's own life and deeper understanding of this diverse world. The mobilities will hopefully show the students and the local communities tolerance and respect.
