Project summary

MWM - Mesuring with Maths is a transnational project for involving four primary schools in three different countries Main Objectives: • To examine, exchange and share good practice in the teaching of maths in different European educational settings. • To improve literacy and language learning for students and staff. • To provide practical opportunities and show a purpose to teaching and learning of Maths. • To demonstrate that maths is a common language that transcends international and cultural boundaries. • We aim to highlight teaching of Maths through everyday activities. We want to show that Maths activities can be done in the local and immediate environment by embracing group work and problem solving. The children will work together in groups to investigate mathematical problems and use their literacy skill for problem solving. The methodologies being used are, use of concrete materials, teacher modelling --skills , strategies and language, oral approach to mental maths , estimating strategies, use of calculators and technology , investigations, outdoor maths trails and real life maths. Our project will be centered on designing and implementing appropriate child centered maths trails in their immediate and local environment. A maths trail allows much scope for integration of maths as pupils become more aware of their own environment and surroundings. Our aim is to encourage a more positive attitude to maths and see purpose and relevance to the concepts and skills learnt in maths class. Following on from this project, we anticipate that the pupils will gain long term benefits and become aware of the common links between maths operations and language used internationally. To increase their awareness and mathematical interest and encourage discussions through maths activities incorporating maths language for problem solving skills. • Common mythologies • Active learning • Talk and discussion • Using the environment • Direct teaching • ICT
