Project summary

Teachers’ leadership is the process by which teachers, individually or collectively, influence their colleagues, principals, and other members of the school communities to improve teaching and learning practices with the aim of increased student learning and achievement. Main tasks performed by teacher leaders include lead and facilitating learning in the classroom, cooperating with head teacher and colleagues, networking with parents and participating in community life outside the school. Some individuals have naturally more leadership than others, but leadership, as all the other soft skills, can be learned. Improvement of school leadership is in the agenda of the European Commission. This project will develop a methodology to improve leadership competence among teachers of secondary schools (students 14-18). The theoretical framework of the project is based on the works of Thomas Gordon (effective communication in the school setting), P. Hersey and K. Blanchard (situational leadership), Peter Gronn (distributed leadership in the school setting). The project will develop a taxonomy of the learning outcomes of leadership for teachers, an online tool for assessment of leadership in teachers, and training courses to improve teachers’ leadership. The consortium is made of 4 organizations active in research and/or training of teachers (P1 IT, P3 IT, P4 RO, P5 PL) and 5 secondary schools (P2 IT, P6 RO, P7 PL, P8 EL, P9 BG). Thanks to the project, a large number of members of target groups will be informed about the project, and about 500 teachers will be involved on it at different levels.
