Project summary

The project will develop and realize the key objective of the 2017 Erasmus Plus program: the social inclusion, operating in the actual procedures and practices within the protection and discharge systems of persons who were moved from their family, by court order and were assigned to the structures, bringing tangible, concrete and transferable improvements, in order to achieve in the best way the independence. The beneficiaries of the project activity will be, first of all, the adults, the "caregivers" as a whole, in other words, all those who come into contact with the subject of the protection path. Will be fully involved educators, trainers, volunteers, but the activity also will address professional orders, such as psychologists, psychotherapists and even the judges of the courts. The European "caregivers", of all the countries involved in the project, will be the protagonists of the project, initially doing a presentation and representation of the existing practices in the matter of study, highlighting the functional aspects, valid, and those that should be modified or changed, in order to achieve the greatest efficiency and effectiveness. The main objective is to make the protection and discharge system the most prolific possible. By changing and innovating the existing practices it is intended to allow an integration maximally inclusive in the social context. The individual will then be able to have instruments which guarantee a full autonomy under three levels, working, housing, emotional - relational. It is believed that if the "caregivers" are the main protagonists of the project activity, the young adults who have used the protection path, are the beneficiaries in a secondary way. It is believed, in fact, that the possibility of reaching working autonomy, housing and solid and secure affectivity, depends by an in-depth analysis and multidisciplinary study that develop the best strategy to be applied in the field. In this sense and definitively, the young adult will have to rely on a studied and reasoned system, that allow equal rights and equal opportunities. The "Guidelines for the accompanying processes to adult life of young people in situations of custody care", are intended as the primary and tangible end product of the project, the tool to allow the sharing and transferability of the new system. The project participants are all subjects that for many years have worked in the care and protection of the disadvantaged people, who could not live, for various reasons, with their family of origin. It will apply a working method oriented towards the group of professionals (caregivers), on a national and international level, but not only, as it will be involved, in addition to the adult, also the young adults. The expected result is about a codification of a procedure, shareable at European level, that will allow all caregivers to use the most effective and efficient practice. This result is achieved by the creation of the "Guidelines for the accompanying processes to adult life of young people in situations of custody care”, which, in the long term, will have to guarantee linearity, punctuality in achieving results and a higher level of efficiency in the work.

Final report summary

The project has achieved the objective of the Erasmus Plus Program 2017, social inclusion, acting on the existing procedures and practices, within the systems of protection and discharge of subjects who have been removed from their family of origin by court order and, who have been taken care of by the assignee care facilities. Through meetings with experts, seminars, study visits and international research based on interviews with care leavers and caregivers, we have developed the "Guidelines for the processes of accompaniment to adult life of young people in foster care situations" and the "Guidelines on the methodology of the Human Project applied to subjects who have experienced forced family separation". These are useful tools, in the daily work of educators, in order to support fragile people in the development and systematization of the process of emotional/relational, housing and work autonomy. The direct beneficiaries of the project activity have been mainly adults, the "caregivers" as a whole, or those who have come into contact with the person who has left the protection process. At the local level, the project saw the involvement of trainers, social workers, volunteers from organizations, psychologists, psychotherapists but also representatives of local institutions, social services and judges from the Juvenile Court. In addition, the project has had as indirect beneficiaries the careleavers, who, through modification and innovation of the practices in use, will benefit from a system of protection and, in particular, of discharge, more structured and agile as possible, so that after the end of the period of foster care at the facilities to which they have been assigned, they will be able to take advantage of a path that allows them to be included in their own social context from the point of view of housing, work and relationships.
