Project summary

Context and objectives: This project is designed to improve students' critical thinking, their awareness of being an active citizen.By taking actively part in the project the students will heighten their self-competence and improve their natural science, technical and digital competences. These goals will be achieved when students deal with different topics around the field "bicycle". It became clear during the planning of this project that there is a lack of awareness among young people about the long-term consequences of their lifestyle. Society in general but more importantly young people, are becoming increasingly unaware of the effects of traffic to the life quality of cities, environment and climate in general. Our project "UPCYCLE EUROPE" aims at achieving an integral educational approach by including practical work rather than an emphasis on theory. Students will get the chance to experience the efficiency of "do-it-yourself" and "learning by doing". The project consists of 4 sub-topics to be worked on by all students together for 6 months each: 1. Bike mobility in European cities - research of the role of bike mobility in selected European cities. - study of the influence of urban development on bike friendliness - research of increasing car traffic - creation of plans by using the digital tool GOOGLE SKETCHUP transnational meeting in Germany 2. Bike maintenance - studying basic methods of bike maintenance in theory as well as in practice. - creating video tutorials - teaching fellow students and elementary pupils how to repair and look after their bikes - excursion to local bike shops transnational meeting in Italy 3. Transport situation in hometown - analysing the transport situation in their own towns - developing suggestions for improvements by using GOOGLE SKETCHUP - meeting with the local policy makers transnational meeting in the Netherlands 4. Motivation - planning and conducting activities to motivate people to use their bikes regularly. - creating motivational photos, videos, songs. transnational meeting in Lithuania Participants: - Maria-Ward-Schule Aschaffenburg (Germany) - Kelmes Jono Graiciuno gimnazija (Lithuania), - OMO Scholengroep Bergen op Zoom e.o.(Netherlands), - I.I.S.S. EINAUDI-CASAREGIS-GALILEI (Italy) Project leaders: Ulrike Reidl (Germany), Ineta Lesciauskiene(Lithuania), Arnold van der Werff (Netherlands), Manuela Beltrami(Italy) 20 subject teachers (6 from each school) 120 students from the participating schools 72 students on transnational learning activities Methodology: All of our activities will be implemented by a wide range of innovative teaching methods both in and outside of school, incorporating: critical thinking, digital competence, collaboration and team work, communication skills, personal and social responsibility and metacognition. Constant evaluation and improvement are self-evident. Results envisaged: - increased participation among young people in society. - healthier lifestyle for the target groups - use and spread of innovative teaching methods - increased personal technological and digital competences and skills

Final report summary

Context and objectives: This project was designed to improve students' critical thinking, their awareness of being an active citizen. By taking actively part in the project the students were able to heighten their self-competence and improve their natural science, technical and digital competences. These goals were achieved when students dealt with different topics around the field "bicycle". The practical approach went beyond the usual methods used in school and the students learned by experiencing how knowledge can be directly applied, e.g. in bicycle maintenance. With their commitment to improvements in the bicycle infrastructure, they experienced how they can help shape policy. The project consisted of 4 sub-topics to be worked on by all students together for 6 months each: 1. Bike mobility in European cities • visit to an exhibition on global cycling • investigation and comparison of bicycle traffic in exemplary European cities • researching the influence of urban planning on bicycle-friendliness, advantages and disadvantages of different modes of transport. • investigation of increasing car traffic • creation of plans by using digital tools like maps and drawing programmes transnational meeting in Germany 2. Bike maintenance • learning basic methods of bicycle maintenance and repair in theory and practice. • studying basic methods of bike maintenance in theory as well as in practice. • creating video tutorials about bike maintenance • Participation in a bicycle fair with, among other things, repair instructions for visitors • “Pit stop" campaign: spontaneous short maintenance for cycling citizens • teaching fellow students and elementary pupils how to repair and look after their bikes • excursion to local bike shops transnational meeting in Italy 3. Transport situation in hometown • analysing the transport situation in their own towns • collection of suggestions for improvement from members of the school family as well as citizens of the city • development of improvement proposals for safe and fast cycling. • meeting with the decision-makers for cycling in the city administration. • presentation of the project in the city's bicycle forum • meeting with local police on road safety • setting up a "do it yourself" repair station at the school's bicycle parking area transnational meeting in the Netherlands 4. Motivation • planning and implementing activities to motivate the school family to use bicycles regularly. • producing creative, motivational photos and videos • redesigning the school's own bicycle parking area transnational meeting in Lithuania Participants: - Maria-Ward-Schule Aschaffenburg (Germany) - Kelmes Jono Graiciuno gimnazija (Lithuania), - OMO Scholengroep Bergen op Zoom e.o.(Netherlands), - I.I.S.S. EINAUDI-CASAREGIS-GALILEI (Italy) Project leaders: Ulrike Reidl (Germany), Ineta Lesciauskiene(Lithuania), Arnold van der Werff (Netherlands), Manuela Beltrami(Italy) 20 subject teachers (6 from each school) 120 students from the participating schools 58 students on transnational learning activities Methodology: All our activities were implemented through a wide range of innovative teaching methods inside and outside the school, including: critical thinking, digital literacy, collaboration and teamwork, communication skills, personal and social responsibility and metacognition. Continuous assessment and improvement were a given. Results achieved: - increased participation of young people in society. - healthier lifestyles for the target groups - use and dissemination of innovative teaching methods - increased personal technological and digital competences and skills
