Project summary

Sport can improve physical fitness but it can also teach valuable social skills, promote personal development and bring communities together, becoming a key factor for education, individual and collective health, integration and social cohesion, crime prevention, citizenship, solidarity and participative democracy. People with fewer opportunities need, for a variety of reasons, extra support to develop their identity, their social skills and their ability to cope with life’s challenges. Sport can be an attractive method to use with this target group and can be extremely effective in stimulating the process of social inclusion. However, educators, coaches and professionals working with this target group often have little or no experience in using sport as an educational tool. Many do not know how to maximise the potential of sport as a method for social inclusion within their regular work. DISCIPLINS will try to tackle this gap by strengthening synergies and cooperation between high education and sport organisations and developing a common expert training programme on social inclusion through sport-based interventions. The project consortium made up 6 institution from Spain, Finland and Italy: HEIs, Sport associations and training organisations that aim at raising potentials of sport as an educative tool for improving social and emotional health of population, and social inclusion and identity, by developing an expert course to be delivered, mainly, at University level addressed to Educators, Social Workers and other graduates and/or professionals dealing with groups at risk of social exclusion. More specifically, the project aims at:  Designing a common tuition in Social Inclusion through sport-based interventions, a EU expert course in Social Inclusion through Sport-based interventions.  Mapping the competences of the Expert in Social Inclusion through Sport-based interventions.  Training the trainers/professors.  Exchanging and valorising significant experiences and transferable models of sport intervention for social inclusion developed by municipalities, sport and other type of organisations that practice integration and citizenship through sport. The main results and outputs of DISCIPLINS will be: O1. Map of Competences of the expert in Social Inclusion through sport‐based interventions. O2. Expert training course in Social Inclusion through sport‐based interventions. O3. Training of trainers for capacity building of the professors. The project also foresees the following multiplier events and transnational training activities: - E1. National information session in Spain. - E2. National information session in Finland. - E3. National information session in Italy. - E4. DISCIPLINS Conference (Spain). - C1. Transnational training session of trainers in Seville (Spain). - C2. Transnational training session of trainers in Rome (Italy). - C3. Transnational training session of trainers in Vantaa (Finland). Regarding the methodology and activities of the project, the development of the Expert training course in Social Inclusion through sport-based interventions will be designed according to the Map of competences developed (O1) and will include the methodology for its implementation and evaluation. The course will have around 15 ECTS credits and will be divided in 3 modules (5 ECTS per module): Module 1 focused on the theoretical and general framework of sport for all; Module 2 focused on good practices of social inclusion through sport-based interventions; and Module 3 focused on the methodologies and tools for social inclusion through sport-based interventions and alternatives. The preparation of the contents will be done collaboratively and from a multidisciplinary approach, with the participation of all partners in all Modules and the selection of a coordinator for each Module. The implementation of the DISCIPLINS training of trainers programme will include international learning activities as 3 transnational training sessions will be organised in the participating countries (one for each module). A session with stakeholders and associated partners will be organised in each country to present DISCIPLINS, share main relevant issues and goals, deepen the knowledge sharing on the main concepts in each partner country and attract these organizations to participate in the training of trainers activities. Finally, a Final Conference will be developed to present and disseminate project results and as an opportunity for dialogue on social inclusion through sport and for exchanging best practices and significant experiences of sport intervention for social inclusion.

Final report summary

*All the documents that provide justification of the development of the project can be found in Google Drive: https://bit.ly/3r72NMf The DISCIPLINS project aims to improve the skills and competences related to sport as a tool for social inclusion and to reinforce the synergies between the educational and sport organisations that make up its partnership. This objective has been achieved thanks to the development of a training of experts in Social Inclusion through interventions based on physical activity and sport. This training is aimed at university students interested in this field, as well as educators, trainers, coaches and professionals working both in organisations dealing with social inclusion and sport organisations. The DISCIPLINS partnership is composed of 6 organisations belonging to different fields of education and training: higher education institutions (P1, P2 from Spain and P3 from Finland), sport associations (P5 from Spain and P6 from Italy) and a training agency (P4 from Spain). At the beginning of the project, the partnership included another P5 partner, CPS, which for internal reasons voluntarily left the project. Among all the partners, it was decided that ASEPES, P5, would become part of the project, assuming a specific role in the design of the audiovisual contents for the training developed in IO2. More specifically, the project has achieved the following results during its 33 months (30 initial months plus 3 months of extension): O1. Creation of the Competence Map and profile of the expert in Social Inclusion through interventions based on physical activity and sport, although this result was not funded. O2. Development and testing of the training course for experts in Social Inclusion through physical activity and sport-based interventions, with the added value of creating an improved version of the freely accessible online platform where the results created can be consulted, with the aim of reaching a larger number of stakeholders. O3. Delivery of training of trainers for teacher training. This was implemented online, organised by both P1 and P5, and a final session was organised by P3 face-to-face in Finland. These trainings were attended by participants from the project partners, having trained a total of 48 people. All the contents and results created within the DISCIPLINS project are available and can be consulted on the DISCIPLINS website (http://disciplins.org/). In addition, the results of IO2 and IO3 are also available on the open access platform (t.ly/mCzv). Apart from the results initially included in the application, in a collaborative way, and as an added value, the creation of high-quality videos was thought of, with the idea of, on the one hand, raising awareness of social inclusion through sport among a larger number of people and giving greater dissemination to the project and its results with a video presentation of the project. On the other hand, the rest of these videos are training resources complementary to the training created in the IO2. These videos can be consulted on the project's website and Youtube channel: http://disciplins.org/ and .t.ly/SP2M Likewise, a Manual to improve the inclusion and usability of the project results and its website has been designed under the name of IOX and can be consulted at this link: t.ly/310V The dissemination of the results of the DISCIPLINS project has been carried out both virtually and in person. On the one hand, through dissemination sessions and events addressed to the main target groups (trainers, social educators, and students). These dissemination events have reached a total of approximately 1600 people (counting face-to-face and virtual). In addition, DISCIPLINS has been presented at 2 international conferences. The first conference was the II Symposium of the SOLIDARIS project. This symposium took place in May 2019 at the Universidad Viña del Mar in Chile. The second international conference where DISCIPLINS was presented took place from 7 to 10 September 2021. The project has been presented in the framework of the EASS 2021 Congress (www.eass2021.com), organised by the University of Cordoba, the University of Seville, and the University Pablo de Olavide and the second one in a hybrid way (online and face-to-face). Approximately 258 people have been reached. In addition, the online dissemination through RRSS and partner websites has had an impact of approximately 63000 people. However, we cannot forget the consortium's effort to adapt the project to the circumstances of the global pandemic, adjusting continue executing all the activities virtually, when it was not possible to carry them out in person.
