EUROPEAN STUDENTS ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE VOLCANO This ERASMUS + KA2 project arises after the volcanic eruptions recorded on the island of El Hierro (Canary Islands, Spain) in 2011 and on the Etna volcano (Sicily, Italy) in 2017. In its vicinity live students who add to their European citizenship a singularity: live on the other side of the volcano. The enormous beauty of these European spaces and their scientific, historical, economic and cultural interest has earned them their declaration, as the case may be, as Geoparks and / or World Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, constituting a European cultural heritage of great social value and educational, one of the horizontal priorities of this project. The testimonies of the students and professors directly affected by the eruptions, strengthened us in the idea of developing this ERASMUS + project among European students and professors who live close to areas with volcanic risk. We will analyze the geological genesis of these phenomena, elaborating pedagogical material on the natural, historical, economic and cultural values of the environment to help the Educational Community in its task of taking advantage of and enjoying this great European heritage and be prepared for the eruptions. It is a project between the IES José Marín de Vélez Rubio (Andalusia, Spain) close to the inactive volcanic Geopark of Cabo de Gata of great scientific, natural and cultural value. And close to 35 rocky shelters belonging to the Rock Art of the Mediterranean Arc of the Iberian Peninsula declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO; the Secondary School das Lajas do Pico on the island of the same name in the Azores Islands (Portugal) located in an active volcanic area near the volcano Do Pico and a Viticulture Landscape declared World Heritage by UNESCO; the IES Villa de Firgas on the volcanic island of Gran Canaria (Spain) next to the volcanic geoparks of Lanzarote and Chinijo Archipelago and Isla del Hierro; and the Istituto di Istruzione Superiore A. Ruíz de Augusta. Sicily (Italy) next to Mount Etna. After participating in several European projects it has been found that in many centers geology and volcanism are not taught in the classrooms, even in educational centers that are "on the other side of the volcano". This gap in knowledge about the nature of these basic natural phenomena in the sciences has led us to also prepare a JOINT TRAINING COURSE OF THE SHORT-TERM TEACHER. There will be 5 days in which 2 teachers will participate for each center and in which experts and university and secondary school teachers will deal with the teaching of volcanism and geology in Secondary and Baccalaureate in the schools of the European Union. It will take place in the Canary Islands (Spain) and will be coordinated by the IES Villa de Firgas and José Marín and the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The main objective of the project is the development of the basic and transversal competences of 60 ESO and baccalaureate European students, from 15 to 17 years, belonging to four European regions, from the execution of multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary tasks on scientific knowledge, historical, economic, social and cultural aspects of these European volcanic areas, through an effective teaching method. Another objective will be the development of basic competences in linguistic and cultural communication. To achieve this, four SHORT-TERM EXCHANGES OF 5 STUDENTS AND 2 PROFESSORS OF EACH INSTITUTE will be carried out, which will act as a HOST CENTER. They will have the format of a 10-day exchange where each student will stay with their host and European team member of the working group. The objective of the mobility will be to analyze the volcanic phenomenon and the cultural heritage of each visited center, the in situ knowledge on that virtually studied natural phenomenon, the cultural immersion and the improvement of the linguistic skills. Visits will be made where specialists will complete the information. In the center the groups will complete the tasks whose RESULTS will be four PEDAGOGICAL-SCIENTIFIC AND CULTURAL ROUTES on the volcanic phenomenon and the natural and cultural heritage analyzed in the four countries. A POSTER-POSTER ON THIS HERITAGE will also be prepared. Four versions will be made in Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and English. This teaching-learning is focused as multidisciplinary intervening the departments of Sciences, Social and Languages of the four European centers so that are integrated in an interdisciplinary way the basic skills on knowledge and interaction with the physical world, linguistic communication, mathematics , the treatment of information and digital competence, the learning to learn, the cultural as well as the social and civic. The English and Spanish languages will be working for the project.
Context Project between the IES José Marín de Vélez Rubio (Spain) close to the inactive volcanic Cabo de Gata Geopark with scientific, natural, cultural value and close to 35 rock shelters of Rock Art declared a World Heritage Site; the Escola Secundaria das Lajas do Pico in the Azores Islands (Portugal) located in an active volcanic area near the Do Pico volcano and a wine-growing landscape declared World Heritage; IES Villa de Firgas on the island of Gran Canaria (Spain) close to the volcanic geoparks of Lanzarote, Isla del Hierro and the La Palma volcano that erupted in September 2021; and the Istituto di Istruzione Superiore A. Ruiz de Augusta, Sicily (Italy) near the Etna volcano (1). Objectives. The main objective has been the development of basic and transversal competences of 60 European students aged 15 to 17 years (2), with the execution of multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary tasks on the scientific, historical, economic, social and cultural knowledge of European volcanic areas . The development of basic competences in linguistic and cultural communication, carrying out the four programmed short-term exchanges of 5 students and 2 teachers from each center (3) and (4). The project has been affected by COVID-19, extending its duration to three years, allowing all the planned activities to be carried out, although in the mobility to Andalusia the institutes of Portugal and Italy have not been able to attend in person, being replaced by virtual mobility (5) . Description of the activities carried out. The tasks have been developed by six working groups each made up of ten students from two countries and whose final product has been the development of the project's WEB (6), a pedagogical-scientific and cultural route and a poster-poster on volcanism of each country (7). We have worked virtually with the digital platforms Facebook (8), email, eTwinning (9) and WhatsApp, carrying out an on-site confrontation in each country with the mobility of 5 students and 2 teachers from each visiting center (10), allowing cultural immersion and use of languages. It has been in the format of a 10-day school exchange. After participating in several European projects, it was found that many centers do not teach geology or volcanism. This gap in knowledge led us to carry out the SHORT-TERM JOINT TRAINING COURSE, with two teachers from each center participating, in which scientists, university and secondary school teachers discussed the teaching of volcanism and geology in schools in the EU. . It was in the Canary Islands and organized by the José Marín and Villa de Firgas IES and the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (11). Long-term expected results and benefits. The Pedagogical-Scientific and Cultural Routes (7) as a result of the research work have been presented to the school community. In the training course for teachers, we have participated in pedagogical workshops on volcanism, laboratory analysis of the different prediction and early warning systems for eruptions, and scientific visits to various volcanoes, both active and inactive (11). Andalusian teachers and students have collaborated in the filming of a professional TV documentary on the cave paintings of the Comarca de los Vélez, declared a world heritage site (7) and the theatricalization of the Legend of the Road has been carried out. de los Gigantes on the formation of basalt columns in a volcano in Cabo de Gata that has led to a report on the regional television Canal Sur TV (7). The pandemic has prevented this action from spreading among all the centers in the region, which is intended to be done when the health situation improves.
