Project summary

Global warming and climate change is a problem that everybody should be aware and convinced of. This project aims to study the reasons of this phenomenon, especially the greenhouse gas emissions due to transportation and to look for some solutions to stop or at least to reduce them. Three schools, from France, Italy and Slovenia, will participate with around 100 students aged between 13 and 17 years old. The first year will be dedicated to the observation of the global warming by analysing weather statistics and to the understanding of the greenhouse effect thanks to measurements and experiments. Moreover, ways to compensate these emissions will be studied. The competences of the Italian partners in biology and chemistry will help the other partners in this part of the project. The second year will be dedicated to the research of solutions to reduce greenhouse emissions due to transportation. Reducing transportation can be a first solution. Slovenian partners are strongly engaged in the physical education of their pupils. They will help the others to reflect and to change their way of moving, especially on short distances. To reduce transportation of goods, consumer habits must also be changed. Solutions for consuming local and seasonal products will also be searched. New technologies and energy sources are now used for transportation. The city of the French partners will soon get a new hydrogen fuel cell bus line. The study of this energy source and of others, like solar panels for example, will aim to understand that technology can also help in finding solutions to reduce global warming. Some applications for mobile devices will be developed, open cartography of green installations will be done, all results of statistics, experiments, measurements and surveys will be published in an open format in the Twinspace of the project and presented during school festivals and science fairs. The objective of the dissemination is to raise awareness of the problem of global warming among a wider audience.

Final report summary

Greenhouse effect is responsible for maintaining heat on Earth. This allowed life to appear and develop. But the increase of emission of greenhouse gases since the industrial revolution leads to an augmentation of the global temperature over the planet. This is the main cause of the climate change and of all problems linked to it. During this project, the pupils got knowledge about the greenhouse effect, its causes and natural ways of regulation. They also looked for some solutions to reduce the greenhouse gases emission, especially caused by transportation. 84 pupils between 11 and 19 years old from three schools from France (vocational school of Saint-Cricq in Pau), Italy (IIS Volta in Lodi) and Slovenia (middle school Preska of Medvode) participated in this project. The first year, they shared experiments on greenhouse effect and on consequences of global warming. They made statistics on data from local professional weather stations and observed the global and regular temperature increase over 45 years. They also built real greenhouses and started to use sensors to collect data to observe influence of having plants in such conditions. The second year, they started to look for some solutions to reduce the greenhouse gases emission. They collaboratively created a survey on eating habits and physical activities. They got information on better physical activities and healthier food. They understood the necessity of eventually changing their way of life, by preferring walking or cycling especially for short distances and by buying local food to reduce greenhouse gases emission due to transportation. They coded applications to calculate carbon footprint and energy brought by food. They started to collect maps of renewable energy sources of their region and added missing newest installations such as the new hydrogen bus of Pau city. Further studies on new technologies for transportation couldn't be carried on due to lock-down in the three countries. To evaluate the knowledge acquired during the project, the pupils took tests before and after the project. They improved their skills in English vocabulary, got experience in coding, and got knowledge about environment, climate and chemistry related to greenhouse effect.
