Project summary

The project that we are presenting plans on organising for two years the editions number 3 and 4 of an event entitled “Les Olympiades du Sacré Coeur”. This event gathers three European “collèges” (from 11 to 15 years old pupils): first, the French one, which coordinates the project. Then, the others are a Greek and a Spanish “collèges” which are partners and are willing to practice the French language and to discover the French culture. Each year, 25 pupils (between 13 and 15 years old) from 3 schools are going to train and then meet to compete during the cultural and sport event. For these Olympiades, the pupils tackle their counterparts during Olympic sport trials -chosen by the school which organises the event since there is a turnover every year-, a challenge of robotics and a quiz of general knowledge about the history of the Olympic Games and their values. This project includes 5 periods of mobility: 1) the staff of each school does a preparatory visit at the school which is hosting the event; 2) since the project is an exchange, there are two travels of the pupils to meet their penfriends abroad and train for the various challenges (for example if France hosts the event, half of the French pupils goes to Spain, the other goes to Greece, and so on); 3) two welcome travels to participate in the Olympiads. Editions 1 and 2 respectively happened in France and in Greece. This project started in September 2016 in order to support the application of Paris to welcome the 2024 Olympic Games. Therefore, we know the making and the educational benefits of such an event (motivation of the pupils to practice foreign languages, citizen involvement, development of Olympic values, learning how to live together, validation of competences for the final-year exams…). Media have taken a real interest in this exceptional project and it has been an opportunity for the different schools belonging to the project to emphasize their European dynamism. We wish to continue this project until 2014 to support Normandy’s offer to be Paris’s strong “root” for the coming Olympic Games. The previous editions were highly expensive and it is obvious for us that we can’t continue to develop this project based on our own funds, without any subvention, regarding for example the number of colleagues who must be involved but also the need of exposure through media.

Final report summary

The ENJOY project is anchored on the organization of sports and cultural olympiads of which editions 1 and 2 have already taken place in the past. The ENJOY project includes the organization of editions 3 and 4 gathering three European schools: a French school coordinating the project, a Greek school and a Spanish school, both willing to practice the French language and to know the French culture. For two years, students between 13 and 15 years old from the three schools will train and meet each other in order to compete during this sporting and cultural event in Olympic sporting events, defined by the schools organizing the event, a robotics test and a general culture test on the history of the Olympic Games and their values. This project includes 4 periods of mobility divided into 2 per year: - Year 1: an exchange of students in France to get to know each other and learn about the events, and participation in the Olympics event in Spain (edition 3). - Year 2: an exchange of students in Greece to discover the emblematic places of the Olympic Games, but unfortunately due to the health crisis, the edition 4 of the Olympics in France could not take place. This project was started in September 2016 to support Paris' bid to host the Olympic Games in 2024. The media coverage of this project was an opportunity for the different participating schools to showcase their European dynamism. This project allowed the students and their supervisors to experience the Olympic Games of yesterday and today by being at the heart of the event: visit to Olympia, live two days at the Olympic Academy like the athletes, visit the Paris 2024 Organizing Committee, meet with the Director of Paris 2024, meet with personalities who work for the influence of the Olympic Games in Europe. The pedagogical benefits of such an event are multiple: increased motivation of students for the practice of languages and sports, involvement in a European project, participation in a world-renowned event, development of Olympic values and good citizenship, validation of skills in the context of end-of-cycle exams. To date, this project, which simply transposes the spirit and the organization of the World Olympic Games to a school scale, has resonated with political institutions that have wanted to take it up and develop it in their city or region.
