Objectives

In recent years, the situation of young people in different European countries is increasingly characterized by similarities. On the one hand, due to new media and demographic changes (such as migration and flight), young people are developing similar cultural characteristics and consumption patterns; on the other hand, the socioeconomic transformation of European societies confronts socially and economically disadvantaged young people with similar challenges and problems. Issues such as youth unemployment, poverty, lack of perspectives and subsequent delinquent tendencies, radicalization and hostility towards foreigners, as well as strong emphasis on patriarchal role models, etc., not only preoccupy youth workers in major cities in Europe, but they are also increasingly reflected in artistic products (video clips, song lyrics, etc.) that find popularity in several countries. Despite this internationalization of youth culture, young people also show regional characteristics. Youth workers limit themselves in everyday practice to certain localities/social spaces for organizational, financial or methodological reasons and very rarely find the opportunity to observe and learn from the ways of dealing and working of youth workers in other countries who face similar challenges and problems. The ways of dealing and working as well as the structures of youth work differ in different countries. The goal of this project was to intensively exchange information about these differences. The staff members of both associations in Vienna and Berlin reflected on these differences and benefited from each other in dealing with a target group that has many similarities. OUTREACH has set itself the goal of reaching young people who cannot be reached through traditional youth work and, to this end, cooperates with institutions such as shelters for refugees or with other social actors in various projects for violence and drug prevention in the context of street work. Through job shadowing, employees of JUVIVO.21 should have received information about these projects and observe the implementation on site and reflect on different ways of dealing with them. Through services such as "park supervision" (Parkbetreuung) and community-oriented services (such as neighborhood newspaper, women's café, neighborhood forum, etc.) in the social houses The FAIR-PLAY-TEAMS, which offer direct communication and mediation for socially disadvantaged groups in public spaces in various districts, also place a special focus on improving the quality of life of young people. These cross-age-group services and projects are an important component of Vienna's youth work. To accompany these projects and offers, which go beyond the classical network work, and to observe the forms of offers, would be an enrichment for OUTREACH staff members. Through job shadowing, OUTREACH and JUVIVO staff should be presented with different forms of community-oriented work and youth work, reflect on them and possibly adapt them in their own practice. The project was not only about theoretical exchange, but also about active observation and examination of the methodical-practical work of both associations in their daily work. How and which topics the staff members in the two European cities Vienna and Berlin deal with, which methods they develop and which goals they set, which social resources they activate, were the important questions for the participants of the project. Another goal of the project was to enable a sustainable cooperation between the two associations. Job shadowing was to be the first step in professional exchange. Getting to know each other personally in an everyday work situation provided a realistic picture for further joint projects and enabled a sustainable exchange. In the long run, this first cooperation should also enable future professional or youth exchange projects.
