Objectives

Zine Camp „We Have a Voice“ is an international youth exchange project. Zine Camp 19 aims to empower youth from different European countries. The exchange brings together participants from different cultural background to tell their stories and share their experiences. Participating groups are: macuco-multiple alternative culture collective (Vienna/Austria), Associação Academia Cidadã (Porto/Portugal), LGBT HHH Collective (Sofia/Bulgaria), TransmitterV (Vilnius/Lithuania) and Spieleberatung (Hamburg/Germany). Zine Camp tackles the question who is represented in media and how. Often youth and young adults come forward with the question why their stories are not shown in media. They tell that it would have been more easy if there would have been positives examples of their situation in media when they where growing up. Also now TV-series, movies, radio or newspapers are not addressing LGBTIQA+ issues or topics of poverty or social exclusion enough. Even though there is more relevant media produced, in the last few years we see a tendency in different European countries to censor media and to restrict citizen’s access to certain information. This harmful trend is on the rise. Therefore alternative ways of sharing information, knowledge and experiences are needed more than ever. Zines also offer the possibility to easily come from the role of a media consumer into a role of media producer. Our project aims to increase youth's media literacy by not only helping to get to know this specific form of media, but also becoming part of zine making community. Through the possibility to learn how to use this medium fast and in a do it yourself style participants will learn how to express themselves and share information through this format. In over a week long program of lectures, workshops, talks, discussions, participants will get to know the history of zines, learn design, writing, drawing techniques required for the zine making, increase their knowledge on copyrights, archiving and zine sharing platforms. They will learn about media production in general. About how to do research, how to identify fake news and how media is connected to modern days politics. They will learn about how media is connected with freedom of expression and how a diverse media landscape can support and deepen democratic structures. By the end of the training participants will have required knowledge and tools to continue making zines on their own, spread them around their local community and through international platforms, and even give workshops on zine making. During Zine Camp participants will meet people from different backgrounds regarding racial, ethical, religious, class, sex/gender and different sexual orientations and other cultural/societal factors. Getting to know each other in a well moderated and caring setting helps to get rid of biases some groups of people might have against each other. It strengthens international and intercultural understanding between young people and promotes importance of diversity in our communities and society. Through several former projects we have learned that projects that create an emancipating moment like in this case through creating your own media, make people more interested in society in general. Young people start to feel that their opinions and experiences matter, that they can make a difference and therefore they get more active in their communities. We see projects like this that deepen democratic expression as a powerful tool against disinterest on social and political questions as well as against populism and far-right-wing ideology and support values of equality and freedom.
