Objectives

Teachers gained more insights to work together complementarily. This is necessary when a student takes ownership and needs to be coached through this process. This way, we concretized effectively the quality of ownership and coaching – which are the school’s building blocs - in terms of school culture, coaching and implementation. Therefore, we aimed at this specific professionalization of our teachers. Building block 1: ownership Teaching differently means granting more choices and freedom, explaining less, letting students carry out tasks more independently, involving students in the assessment process such as pear evaluation. Following the desire to organise a class differently, there is a need for different didactics. Specific didactics aim for a critical assessment of every teacher and their lesson: how can I optimize my class to make sure that my students get everything out of it? This ultimately changes students’ behavior and increases motivation. Building block 2: coaching Coaching skills are needed when discussing learning outcomes to guarantee an appropriate follow-up in the learning process. Both giving and receiving feedback are important in this process.

Background

By necessity, and along with a new headmaster, the school needed to move in a new direction. Therefore, a targeted process of renewal and change was necessary. This vision was a tool to support that process. To give teachers inspiration on how education can be organized differently, it was important to look elsewhere and to attend trainings on matters from this dossier. This international professionalization has brought new insights on ownership and coaching that we are currently applying actively in our school to this day.
