"Remember to look up at the stars, not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see & wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be curious." We hope this beautiful sentence of Stephen Hawking can inspire us through the exchange. Imagine yourself walking in Belgium or in La Réunion glancing at the sky and searching for a particular star or star constellation. Being in Belgium, the massive amount of artificial light often fades away the beauty of the galaxy. Everybody there grew up with a lot of light, it's an addiction. Everybody needs to be enlightened. In La Réunion this amount of light is much less, so a massive amount of stars will light up in the sky. Unfortunately, not as used to be, because of the growing urbanization nowadays. Belgium represents that side of the axis where youngsters do not know a life without (overexposure) of artificial light, whereas the opposite holds for youngsters of La Réunion. In La Réunion the mountains have been sparted of artificial light and what could potentially cause a massive amount of light is one of nature's masterpieces: a volcanic eruption. A little group of Belgian youngsters came up with the idea of creating an exchange about LIGHT POLLUTION. This because of the problems it brings to our earth nowadays and the big amount of light everywhere and always in Belgium. After finding a partner in La Réunion and some motivated youngsters we found out that we can broaden the theme of the light pollution to three light related themes, so we also have attention to the beauty light can give and the metaphorical way we can interprete light - enlightenment. So, light is what we want to put in the spotlights and more specific we hope to shed some light on the advantages of light (i.e. beautiful sceneries or critical reflection) and its disadvantages (i.e. light pollution). As such we want to question ourselves. "Do you see the light?" or "Have you seen the light" at the end of the exchange. During this exchange we hope to find an answer. More concrete we want to put in the picture and enlighten the different aspects of (en)LIGHT(enment): 1. LIGHT BEAUTY: A positive attention of the beauty we have nowadays (light beauty such as astronomical and volcanic light) is very important. This positive view is necessary to find a support and a motivation in the importance of environmental conversation. We are open to the beauty light can bring and it's opportunities. 2. LIGHT POLLUTION: The physical aspect of light pollution such as astronomical (which obscures the view from the night sky) and as ecological light pollution (which alters natural light regimes). As youngsters living at the coast, we define light energy as a natural pathway for light to reach our shoreline. However, light is more than that. We have natural light, such as coming from our Galaxy which is besides beautiful also beneficial for nature. A second source of light is artificial light. And this kind of light disturbs natural light and the eco-system (e.g. the light on the roads, parking lots,...). The effect that artificial life has upon organisms and on the structure of ecosystems as a whole is what is called "ecological light pollution" and what concerns us as youngsters. In La Réunion e.g. this light changes has a negative effect on the petrels and shearwaters. The introduction of artificial light is one of the most drastic human made changes to the earth. It is comparable to toxic pollution, land use change and climate change due to increases in the concentration of greenhouse gases. Still… up till now its damaging effects remain mostly under the radar. 3. ENLIGHTENMENT: The mental aspect of light which is metaphorical: enlightenment, (critical) reflection and adopting different perspectives to bring certain important life aspects in and out the spotlights. Being a group of Belgian and La Réunion light-catchers we hope to shed some light to the light. Via critical reflection we aim to define what light (natural and artificial) means to us. We aim to define its advantages and disadvantages and try to question its' necessity of human living and life in general and this via considering each others cultural perspectives. We are convinced that due to our different country of origin, both extremes of the light-pollution axis can be taken in to account. Taking a critical attitude is not only about the construction of a discussion or argumentation, but also about really taking responsibility. Only then a critical view can be substantiated. We will consider these aspects via different types of artistically expressions which also imply the use of lack light. This project will result in a LIGHT NIGHT at the end of a project. During this night we will present the project to the local people with the première of our LIGHT MOVIE (movie made by the youngsters during the exchange), a debate and workshops. In this, the youngsters will take full responsibility from the first moment till the end.
