Objectives

The two institutions have embarked on a strategic planning process, which refers to practices that will ensure access to training programmes for both disabled people and teachers and their volunteers. In a survey carried out, it was found that an important motivation for the participation of the above-mentioned people in these programmes included the desire to explore knowledge, improve skills and acquire competences. Volunteers are a decisive factor in their efforts to develop action plans regarding disability. For this reason, institutions have moved towards developing actions to enhance the professional development of volunteers. The institutions, through the project, have taken part in the organisation of collaborative training programmes with Greek volunteers, where they have had the opportunity to discuss, analyse and revise their views, both through their personal experiences and through the experiences of their colleagues. Particularly important is the benefit of the knowledge they have gained in relation to the educational treatment of people with disabilities, which has helped them to reduce uncertainty and increase their confidence.

Background

The main objective of the project was the acquisition, on the part of the participants, of the necessary knowledge and the cultivation of social, communication and professional skills and attitudes, in order to contribute to the upgrading and modernization of voluntary services in their institutions and to the optimization of the services provided to people with disabilities. The specific objectives of the project were to develop aspects of the participants' personalities , to communicate and cooperate with people from another country, to develop their self-image, to improve their ability to cooperate and socialise and to develop their sense of European citizenship. Participants, through the project and in cooperation with the host organisation, have been involved in organising collaborative training projects with Greek volunteers and teachers, as relevant research has shown that the development of professional competence is particularly promoted through these projects, where volunteers have the opportunity to discuss, analyse and revise their views, both through their personal experiences and through the experiences of their colleagues.
