Objectives

European Voluntary Service has started since 1996 between Germany and France and it was such a successful initiation that European Commission had decided to integrate it into its’ youth programme in order to provide a long term learning and service experience for young people. According to the reports published by European Commission 100.000 young people between 17 and 30 years old had participated into the EVS programme during the last 22 years. Only in 2014, 10.000 young people used this opportunity to become EVS volunteers. Based on the plans of the European Commission, again 100.000 volunteers will be welcomed by receiving organisations between 2014 and 2020 through European Solidarity Corps and the Erasmus + programme. The EVS itself grew up during these 22 years and now is able to provide a fantastic opportunity for youth on developing solidarity, mutual understanding and tolerance among young people, while contributing to strengthening social cohesion and promoting active citizenship. However, as several researches had stated in the last 11 years, the quality of the voluntary activities are the same important as the quantity! Hence we have initiated this project about how to be a GREAT mentor: providing the needed support for volunteers. How to be a Mum, a Dad, a friend, a helper, a healer, a repairer, a car driver, a whatever is needed for a volunteer. How to support identify, define, and keep on track their learning processes based on their service and cultural background and support them to recognise, formulise and document it based on their needs. Share, explore and practice methods and tools for supporting learning processes of volunteers during the voluntary activity based on their needs then put it into youth work realities. The project will provide space to exchange good practices, success stories, learning experiences of the organizations that have been working with EVS and ESC volunteers. Aims & objectives - To equip organizations working in ESC projects with knowledge and skills in running projects in the framework of European Solitarity Corps Programme. - To create a responsible attitude and raise awareness among participants about the importance of good preparation in each ESC project, which is able to avoid many of possible further problems and challenges. - To develop a critical thinking skills among participants and discuss the possible challenges while doing ESC projects – with special emphasis of challenges while hosting/sending volunteers - To motivate participants and raise their confidence in organising more ESC projects - To work out implementable hosting projects together. The overall aim of the training course is to train mentors, tutors, supervisors for being aware and raising understanding about quality aspects of voluntary activities according to proposals of European Solidarity Corps and Erasmus+ programme. Furthermore, to develop competences of host organizations and mentors in order to run quality voluntary activities through experiential learning with special focus on the service and learning processes of volunteers. To learn, explore and practice how volunteers can be developed and improved personally, socially and professionally during an voluntary activity. This project will bring together: 33 youth workers, active members, facilitators who are directly work with local and international volunteers as mentors and this multicultural team will have to work together and contribute to each other’s learning process.Goal of the training is to increase the quality of mentoring in European Volunteering Projects and to support active mentors, tutors, supervisors working with their volunteers. The training course will guide the representatives of accredited ESC organizations towards better understanding of the different quality aspects of ESC and support their partnership building for future co-operations. During the project The ESC organizations will have a chance to share their previous experience all the while learning additional skills and competences that will empower them and bring more quality to their future ESC projects. In this way the project aim to develop capacities of accredited ESC organisations and enhance the quality of coordination of ESC projects Through the training course participants will reflect about roles, responsibilities, challenges and needs concerning European Volunteering Projects and shar best practice and tools for supporting volunteers. This training activity invites active mentors (newcomers that are already involved in an ongoing project as well as experienced mentors) that feel the need of developing their competences further and improving the quality of their daily work.
