The main activity of the project helped meet some aims and needs of the school in the field of the development of teaching of foreign languages. They include increasing language competencies of teachers of foreign languages, increasing language competencies of teachers of STEM subjects in English language, increasing the amount of specific terminology in STEM subjects, and as a consequence increasing language competences of students in foreign languages (mainly English and German). Minor aims of the projects were to support professional development of all project participants, to ensure the cooperation between language teachers and teachers of STEM subjects, and provide the development of international cooperation through other projects.
The project „Professional development of the teachers of Gymnázium Boskovice developed as a reaction to a new concept of the school development. This concept is based on the development of the EU labour market and on prognosis which predicts the lack of labour force in the field of technical and scientific fields. Open single market of the EU requires good knowledge of English language (as well as other languages). Good knowledge of foreign language professional terminology increases the competitiveness of job applicants. The school puts emphasis on strengthening technical and scientific subjects as well as increasing the quality of teaching foreign languages. Our graduates mostly continue studying at universities. They will use foreign language terminology of STEM subjects when studying foreign professional literature, during their educational stays and practical trainings, and mainly in their labour mobility. The first step to fulfil this concept is to support long-term education of our teachers and strengthening their language, didactic and methodological competences. The ultimate consequence and result of this school concept is to support the mobilities of young graduates and their competitiveness within the EU.
