Our school planned to become an Eco School in the future. This required a group of teachers to work on this topic, to present it and to involve all stakeholders in the work. On the one hand, this group was to be trained to create sustainable environmental awareness. The aim was to understand the challenges of sustainable development, to set goals and to design educational programmes for sustainable development. It was important to cultivate cooperation through training programmes and also to apply different learning techniques. The principles of a sustainable school should be understood and implemented. A programme for sustainable education in school should be developed that inspires students and involves teachers and administration. Because, if we want to live in a socially and economically sustainable community, development for sustainable education must play a key role. Current research and practices in this area have shown the importance of values for sustainable behaviour change, how to integrate values into one's learning and how sustainable behaviour change can take place in schools and society.
The project "Raising Awareness - Changing Habits" went hand in hand with Key Action 2 with the same title. The project has a focus that emerged from the European Development Plan. From the surveys of all teachers, staff and pupils involved in the school work, it had become clear that our school already has a high level of teaching quality, but that further investment is needed in teaching. For example, it is not enough to teach content such as energy management theoretically. These taught or learned values must also be put into practice. So it is about increasing mindfulness, about becoming aware of what we have in common and how we can control this awareness. The goal was a clear improvement in dealing with common property, a practical use of learned knowledge and a better linking of theory and practice. All training should focus on this.
