Objectives

The teachers' improved language and intercultural skills enhanced the networks with schools and other partners abroad, facilitated carrying out projects with them, enabled the school to offer bilingual modules in more subjects and next to English-German modules also French-German ones. Additionally, the communication with and the integration of students without German as their L1 is improved. Teachers are more aware of diversity and its advantages which makes education more democratic and egalitarian. The teachers' improved ICT skills enabled them to create a plan for ICT usage at the GaR, to increase the usage of digital media in lessons and to improve the students’ ICT skills. The focus here was on languages and sciences. The combination of ICT and diversity should also enable the teachers to offer differentiated lesson plans for heterogeneous classes. Because of more language awareness, a positive attitude towards diversity, heterogeneity and ICT skills, the GaR’s regular lessons and especially the lessons in German as a Second Language were improved. All the aspects mentioned strengthened the GaR’s plans to improve the teaching and to develop new plans for the school. This again strengthened the school’s reputation.

Background

With the help of ESMO, the GaR was able to proceed with its European Development Plan, to support its KA2 Project STEM as a Root of the Future, to establish its new European programme in which some subjects are taught bilingually (English-German), and to implement the results of the external evaluation carried out by the ministry of education and culture of the Saarland. With a new policy on using digital media in schools and offering the schools a budget for this, the same ministry asked all schools to develop a concept on which hard- and software to be purchased and on the appropriate use of these in lessons. Furthermore, the government of the federal state Saarland intensified its so-called France-strategy and within this strategy especially the focus on schools. At the same time, the GaR recorded high enrolment numbers of immigrants or refugees. This was and is due to international companies having settled in the area of the state capital of Saarbrücken, and the ongoing refugee movement. With the start of the Ukraine war in 2022, the numbers of enrolment rose even more sharply. Additionally, an Accredited European School was established in the immediate neighbourhood of the GaR instead of at the location of the GaR.
