Project summary

The Smart Mobility 2.0 project involves a total of 5 high schools from Germany, Spain, Bulgaria, Italy and Latvia. It is based on an up-to-date topic and deals with the relevant question of how mobility will change in the coming years and what answers students have to these changes. For sure the mobility of today's young people will continue to move towards alternative drives, autonomous driving and smart city concepts. The diversity in the project team will help to cover different aspects like space (Lleida) , sea (Pozzallo), small and big cities as well as rural areas (Bukarest), digital tools ( Riga) and places and times of slow mobility (Heidenheim). The topic is to be discussed both in the European context of active civic participation and in the scientific context. Therefore the project will start with a meeting in Brussels where participants will get an insight in the EU strategy for mobility as a part of EU strategy 2020/2030. Thus they´ll become aware of the impact on decision making on national, regional and local level. The science-related part in this project is reflected against the background of the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing. So the first common learning mobility hosted by the partner school in Lleida will bring input from space science and inform about the role of ESA and its educational facilities. In this way, students will also recognize the technical advances that can be expected from space travel. The pattern of the “European House”, which was created as a model in a previous project by some of the partners, will be used in this project in order to better compile the results and to reflect the European dimension of the topic “Smart Mobility 2.0” and in our approach. The objectives of our project are raising awareness of the future challenge of mobility in times of climate change. We want to develop new methods of implementing smart mobility in the school curriculum. Students´active citizenship will be developed by making new initatives based on the concrete needs that students have identified during their joint European project work. The main activities of the project are: Research in order to raising awareness of the challenge of future mobility and find out which facilities are already offered and which companies in the region are already dealing with this topic. The programme of each meeting will include such a study visit in the surrounding of the school. The concrete implementation of environmentally friendly mobility concepts in the partner schools is planned. At least one action day on smart mobility will take place in each partner school. All traveling connected with the meetings will have to meet the criteria of low carbon food print. Topics like deceleration and slowness will be covered by exercising. We will practice slow movement in all partner schools and during all meetings in order to focus health aspects. These experiences lead to more environmentally friendly forms of transport such as running, cycling, e-mobility. Last but not least the students will develop active citizenship by getting in contact with the municipal authorities at local level to discuss their ideas and find concrete ways of implementing them in a local smart city concept . The methodology covers different methods, academic ones like research, discussion and documentation and practical ones like physical training, walking, yoga and peer learning during the meetings when the hosting students will teach the European group. Students` entrepreneurship will be activated by asking them to make new initatives on local level concerning with smart mobility . The concrete outcomes of the project will be the digital European House which is filled with a quality selection of the lessons, guidelines and good practice examples concerning implementation of smart mobility in schools; the most attractive among them is a smart mobility robot constructed by students. Visual evidence of students active citizenship at local /regional /European level. The impact envisaged is an increased awareness of the need of smart mobility in the whole school community and in the local community. Better mobility concepts and facilities in each partner school and in the local communities will be put into practice. As the dissemination is planned for all levels and different target groups e.g. teacher training institutions, European and international school networks like the net of EP partner schools, PASCH, UNESCO the digital European House will be a long term tool for teachers in all partner schools and in other schools. Other organisations like cycling clubs or associations committed to e-mobility or solar mobility will benefit by our project because they will find new members and enrich their activities by our proposals.

Final report summary

The Smart Mobility 2.0 project was extended by one year due to the pandemic. All partner schools worked closely together throughout the entire period and achieved essential project goals: e.g.Imagefilm, survey on behaviour towards mobility in all partner schools, posters and exhibitions about climate-friendly mobility, all partners took part in the European mobility week, various activities like introducing certain apps connected with mobility and a tool to calculate the carbon footprint , presentations about smart mobility, cooperation with partners outside school in order to elaborate a concept on smart mobility, excursions designed according to sustainability, common avtivities to better and more move their bodies, holding speeches about smart mobility in the local community, competition on finding new ideas how to practice "smart mobility" in the respective communities, establishing a common project website in the shape of the "European House 2.0". The joint production of a robot has been prepared by the partner school in Lleida, but due to the pandemic restrictions it could not be completed jointly. In total, only 3 out of 5 meetings could take place. During the pandemic there were digital meetings via zoom or jitsii-meet and the actions and products of the project work were posted in the TwinSpace and partly published (https://twinspace.etwinning.net/100209). This made it easy for each partner to keep in touch and follow developments at the schools. In general, digital media played an important role in the communication between pupils: mainly Whatsapp and Instagram. The developments in the field of mobility between 2019-2022 impressively showed how topical and important it was to deal with the subject. This led to strengthen the participants motivation and commitment. The 2030 Agenda and the Green Deal were a decisive framework for the priorities of the mobility project. So it was a good idea to start the project with the meeting in Brusssels (C1) were the teachers learned about smart mobility on European level so that they had in mind the European context when they worked with their students on the project and they could implement basic knowledge about EU. The diversity of mobility, which was already apparent at the time of the application and led to individual focal points in the five schools, was also a great enrichment in the course of the process, Nevertheless, two important questions arose due to the lack of meetings: How can one do justice to such a multi-layered complex of topics with the most diverse orientations? What can a satisfactory result look like? It was good to see that the participants wanted to capture this diversity and complexity of movement, because different conditions also require different strategies or solutions: e.g. Pozallo focused on transport by ship, Lleida concentrated on space technology, Bucharest was concerned about mobility between the big city and rural areas nearby. The effectiveness of the cooperation made it possible to create a project website in a very short time, which presents the best products and also contains a step-by-step plan that supports mobility management in schools. As we said in our application we designed the website according to the pattern of our European House 2.0. so that users are aware of the European context and find evidence of European active citizenship in all our intiatives and acitivities presented there. The system was deliberately designed to be open so that new developments can be taken into account at any time. Other schools can use the platform to engage more intensively with school mobility. The students have thus succeeded in making a wide-ranging subject area available to other schools in an attractive way. The acquired knowledge in the field of technical innovation and climate-friendly mobility was also linked through social aspects: Competitions were linked to fundraising runs or the city cycling campaign was supported with a "bike bus" that makes cycling together on the way to school an experience. This social added value of our new "smart mobility" reveiled during the project work and it can be seen as a good argument when it comes to strengthen a positve attitude towards such European project work in schools. The partner schools were able to win over extracurricular institutions: Companies, the Federal Environment Agency, the city administration or start-ups. The mutual impulses were profitable for both sides. Everywhere, the commitment of young people to climate-friendly transport was welcomed. The project was able to influence local decision-makers. The role of the young generation for the mobility turnaround was underlined by the dissemination at various events e.g.competetion on best proposals which was awarded by MP in Heidenheim or presentation on radio in Lleida and Pozzallo. As a result of our kick-off activities the participants and parts of the school community were well prepared. Surveys, research, competitions, actions, workshops, (role) plays, events with student presentations, radio reports, exhibitions, discussion rounds, running and cycling events, climate-friendly class trips have increased awareness for smart mobility - trust the motto: smart on the road - live better. The actions were also integrated into long-term measures so that, for example, participation in the European Mobility Week for the partner schools becomes a fixed component also for future school events. In the best case, municipal partners could be won over for the EMW in addition to the schools. The participants could also see the problems and obstacles when it comes to introduce the use of new climate -friendly technology:an e-bus was developed and constructed directly by a global company on site, but that the city did not even adopt it as part of a fixed e-bus fleet. More meetings are planned.
