Project summary

Increased heterogeneity, the multiplicity of risks of digital media and progressive right-wing populism pose new challenges for teachers and pupils alike - in school as well as in their private lives. As a school, we see it as our duty to defend democratic values and freedoms, as these are the basic prerequisites for a peaceful coexistence of society and, in a figurative sense, for the microcosm of schools. We agree that peaceful co-existence contributes significantly to the development of a positive school climate, in which pupils and teachers can work productively and, above all, live "healthily". Therefore, our project HEALTH @ school is attempting to tackle current challenges such as depreciation of values and cyberbullying as part of a two-year collaboration between European schools (Bari, Italy / St. Pierre, La Réunion France / Gran, Norway and Windsbach, Germany). At the same time, we want to identify factors that strengthen the idea of a heathy school. Our central objective of this collaboration is thus to increase the overall well-being of all members of each school. As further objectives we define - prevention and intervention of bullying at school - preventing stress for students and teachers by creating a positive school and classroom environment - communication of values, especially with regard to dealing with heterogeneity and democracy building - Increasing physical health and, as a result, the performance of our students The field of action of our project should also be extended to the digital world of the students. Thus, the list of the above goals of HEALTH @ school is complemented by - Prevention of cyberbullying - Guidance on responsible action in social networks - Teaching values in the digital age About 90 students (14-18 years) and 25 teachers will actively contribute to the project´s work, but it is a big concern for us to involve as many members of the school families as possible in our results and products. We plan five project trips, different work phases between the mobilities and a number of additional virtual meetings in TwinSpace. As part of various activities, we will, among other things, work on the design of up-to-date teaching materials, which will be usable across disciplines and schools. In the project areas "mental health" and "physical health" we will deepen the competences of all participants in the areas of bullying and violence prevention as well as nutrition and sport and get to know methods for coping with stress. In our last meeting we will transfer the findings from these areas into the digital world of the students. We call this area "digital health". The publication of the products of our project in TwinSpace ensures a long-term use of our project results by European schools and thus underlines the relevance of HEALTH @ school. Concrete results of our project should be easy-to-implement, English lessons on bullying and value teaching, which can then be applied by all partner schools (and other interested educational institutions) and embedded in a holistic "healthy school" concept. In addition, a meaningful supervision concept for teachers will be developed, which should help to relieve and reduce the stress on the college.

Final report summary

Due to the cancelled learning activities and the long school closures, the partners succeeded to varying degrees in achieving the goals over the course of the school years. The motivation of our students to take an interest in the topic of health during the pandemic - and especially at times of school closures - was moderate. The focus in distance and face-to-face teaching was clearly on learning content and curriculum implementation. In addition, no extracurricular activity was allowed to take place in the schools for a long period of time, which was not conducive to the originally formulated goals. Our main goal, to increase the well-being of the school family, became more of a "well-being despite the pandemic" and the exchange about how to deal with the new life situation was now in the foreground. The pupils dealt with topics such as "sports exercises at home", "stress prevention in the family" and worked on digital products in these areas, which can be found in the TwinSpace. Especially at times of lockdown, topics were focused on to motivate the students to leave their rooms and make the best of the extraordinary situation together with their families. But the exchange was not only important for the students, the online meetings were also a welcome motivator for us teachers to cope with the difficult time. Digital surveys were conducted on the health and well-being of the students and, in a modified form, also for the teachers. The results were not published, but were used by the project leaders to adjust the goals of "Health@school". The Italian partner school offered a workshop on TwinSpace at the beginning of the project to ensure that the project results could be made public. The TwinSpace is divided into physical, mental and digital health in alignment with our sub-goals. In addition, there is a presentation on each of the partner schools as well as various folders containing the products of each school, including designs for a logo and seasonal greeting cards from the students. In the area of physical health, yoga (also online) was offered at the schools, a presentation on sports opportunities at home was created, and work was done on healthy eating plans. After the schools opened, a lot of stress relief was offered through nature walks, especially in France. In addition, the students documented digitally what they ate on a normal school day. The results could be viewed on TwinSpace and discussed by the participants in the forum. As part of Mental Health, a lot of attention was paid to stress management due to the pandemic. Already in October 2019, as part of the Teacher Training, training on Cardiac Coherence was offered by the French partner school. Surveys on stress levels at the beginning of the pandemic led to different results at the schools. The responsible teachers tried to work together with the students on this topic, also digitally. Various results can be found in the TwinSpace. In the sub-area of Digital Health, a lot of work was done on cyberbullying, especially at the Italian school. As a result of the digital lessons that had to take place, the originally planned "Digital Detox" was of course no longer feasible in this form. The idea of doing without a digital device for a certain period of time was replaced at most partner schools by workshops on "Responsible use of social media" and "Safety on the Internet". Great importance was attached to dealing with the pandemic in general. Thus, at the beginning, when the extent of Covid was not yet known and the world suddenly came to a standstill, the topic "What I see from my window" was creatively implemented by the SuS (results in the TwinSpace). The Covid theme was extended by documentation of the pupils on "Covid and my school", a project that was supposed to show the pandemic-related changes in the schools. The topic "Covid and pollution" was also discussed. Other offers within the project were a communication workshop, film work, creation of a scrapbook, work with the digital tools "Canva" and "bookcreator" and offers on the English language. Different events were organized to spread the Erasmus+ idea and also school festivals and other events at e.g. Christmas were used to show the importance of European cooperation and to attract new students to the new project generation. Our project results on TwinSpace can nevertheless be used well in everyday school life even without a pandemic. From the lesson plans to the students' digital products, the content can be profitably and easily implemented.
