The project "INCLUSION! Actions across boundaries" aimed at bringing together young people with different backgrounds to critically assess and practically address the issue of inclusion in local communities in Europe. To achieve this, participants addressed the questions what it feels like to be an outsider, to have no decision-making power and face certain restraints based on your gender, age, nationality, sexuality, skin colour, disability and religious beliefs, and discussed a current political climate in Europe where democratic values of tolerance, equal opportunities and respect for difference are endangered by the upheaval of extreme-right populism, resentment and blame against those looking, acting and speaking differently. To counteract and address these issues from both personal and social perspective, the project INCLUSION! sought to raise awareness of young people of the values of solidarity and tolerance in Europe, to discuss what social exclusion is, what the discriminated groups are, and to work out practical solutions how to foster more inclusion in the local European communities and enhance equal rights and opportunities for everyone regardless of nationality, culture, (dis)ability, sexual orientation, etc. The project was set out to include two international youth exchanges, an advance planning meeting and local follow-up activities. The overall project objective was to empower young people to become agents of change in their communities and involve young people with fewer opportunities and diverse background in direct exchange, dialogue and collaboration. Through increased awareness of the issue inclusion and importance of tolerance, diversity and respect in today’s society, combined with practical skills and project ideas, young people got involved in the international exchange of personal experiences and in development of project ideas targeting local issues and challenges. Despite the global Covid-19 pandemic, or even because of it, the project helped them to see themselves as agents of change and find out how to build more inclusive communities in Europe with youth initiatives aiming at building connections and promoting collaboration, which was directly linked to the objectives of the ERASMUS+ Programme Key Action 1.
