Objectives

European Youth Weeks is a multilateral youth exchange that takes place in Haus am Maiberg, an Academy for Social and Politica Education of the Diocese Mainz, which gives young adults the possibility to experience the diversity of Europe and dvelop their social and political consciousnes in favour of a more active citizenship role. The core goal of the encounter, which takes place for the 26th time this year, is the strengthening of democratic competences among the participants. This includes the understanding, that all people, with their different needs and concerns, are fundamentally equivalent. This also involves the acknowledgement of Human Rights. Participants should understand, that democracy creates deliberative spaces, in which under the principle of equivalency, creative soluations can be found, in which the individual doesn't loose something through compromise, but can actually reach an optimal result for everyone if a democratic decision making process is used. Participants confront themselves with their own opinions, prejudices and patterns of thinking, learn to articulate them and exchange them with others. At the same time they are practicing consensus. This pedagogical process promotes tolerance (acceptance of the difference of others), rationality (view your own position critically) and creativity (finding creative solutions apart from zero sum games). At the same time participants will be confronted with diversity and different perspectives and how to reflect them. Here the question arises about how processes of decision making can be designed to be inclusive for all groups of society. They reflect about the dealing with an heterogeneous society and personal attitudes toward differences and foreigners. Based on concrete examples like hate speech, fake news, freedom of speech and data protection etc., participants will discuss about challenges to set up and practice a democratic living together in Europe and in the group. During the programme there will be trips connected with the topic like a visit to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, street activities to involve also citizens around the center and meetings with experts and politicians. The programme will consits of non-formal actvities promoting reflection and interaction between participants and encouraging to share personal opinions, knowledge and abilities. The project will be process orientied in order to make sure that the interests of participants will be included. The idea of the project is to promote self-directed and independet learning. Creative workshops and various evening activities like motto-evening and talk-shows will complete the programme. The project will be led by an internatiopnal team of young trainers. European Youth Weeks will be an peer-to-peer-education project. Eleven european organizations of international youth work are taking part in realizing the project.
